Suggestions for a challenge
I love the game but as a longtime paradox player I can't seem to find a challenging start. Does anyone know of a good start that will give me a long, 10 generation or so challenge?

My first game I played as the Byzantines, surely an easy start but I always play the Byzantines in games when available, just like them. After creaming the Turkish invasion and surviving the 1st succession crisis it became an expand at your leisure game.

2nd game I played as the 1 province start King of Aragon. Within 3 generations I was Emperor of Hispania. Fun while it lastest, but too easy.

3rd game let's try a duke. Duke of Flanders, not the smallest duke but not a king at least. An interesting game but over again too quick. I left France and joined the HRE so that I could pick up some territories to form the Kingdom of Frisia. Gave a gift to the Duke of Aquaitaine and my son marries his daughter. Set up to inherit. France takes the holy land in a crusade but the Fatimids launch a counter attack and I guess use de jure claim to capture back a county the French king personally took over. To appease his new overlord the French king converts to Islam! It wasn't in my plans but the option to Holy War a messed up France was too much to pass up. In 2 generations I conquered most of France, inherited the Aquitaine, and won a civil war to install myself as Holy Roman Emperor. Okay, boring now.

4th game go for a minor count in Hungary. In 4 generations I was king, and blobbing through Russia.

I've played on normal and very hard difficulties. Would like to play a long game where I am in longterm peril and in constant danger. Note: I do not have either the Republic or the Old gods expansions.

if you have ruler designer, play as a heretic vassal of the HRE and try to become emperor, then conquer the rest of the catholic world.

I'd really suggest getting TOG, sure you can just dominate Europe with the Norse but you can also make it difficult by starting as one of the African nations and try and win with a different religion. I'd also suggest grabbing a few of the common mods, like CK2+ and P&T to make a game a bit better, or maybe try roleplaying your charcter aka only be nice if you character is, and actively choose bad events when you have a turd for a character.

How about you try playing as King Harold in the 1066 invasion of England?

this was made too easy in the recent patches. i beat both their armies with only the event spawned troops

You could try some of the big rebalancing mods such as CK2+ or Project Balance, they add a lot to the game and also make it more difficult (to some extent)

Also, if you like role playing, perhaps you could set some rules for yourself - such as behaving as your character actually would based on his/her traits rather what you would do as a player with all your meta-knowledge and min/maxing and so forth. Although I do know it can be difficult to pick the "wrong" event choice or do some thing that you know is stupid just cause your character is Wrothful or somet hing =p

The old gods dlc play as a zorastrian ruler and conquer persia and restore the church. If I manage to do this without cheats or reloads I will have officially beat this game.

I will officially go out on a limb and say l'Hamy's suggestion is undoable. I'm currently working on just that objective and have failed miserably. Even using liberal amounts of cheats (OK, not that liberal at times, seems I'm always opening the console) I'm having troubles. Hmm, if only I didn't know how to 'cheat'.

I suggest you spend money get the old gods dlc then play as the canaries you start as county with no land bridge no ships and barely a army so VERY HARD MODE.

Zoroastian arent all that tough of a start. If you can enoucrage a big nation to be your ally, you can happily expand.

You could just go for a Naval invasion of Spain.

Have you set the difficulty to Very Hard? It doesn't make the game too much harder but It gives all your opponents pretty good boosts to levy size and reinforcement rate. If you havent done that you might want to set it to Very Hard then start a 1066 campaign as Venice or a minor count.

Venice is overpowered, period. King-level and Republic? Come on.
