DLC Hell - are you kidding me
All this DLC stopped me buying the game. What is even in the vanilla game, if you can add DLC for 80€.
Sorry marketing guys - in my case you have been far over the top.

It is on sale a lot of the time think I have paid < £40 for almost eveything.
You don't actually need the DLC there is still more game time than you can possibly ever play in the Vanilla.

Most of the DLC is just fluff. Fancier Units, New Music, etc. The only ones that I would recommend as mandatory are the actual expansions. Legacy of Rome, Old Gods and the republic.

With the 75% off it was all together for 20$ (not including the old gods)
and the base game IS ♥♥♥♥ING GREAT, why shouldnt they be able to add on to it?

All content is there and available within the basic game. You don't have to buy any DLC, you'll still have Byzantine intrigue, republics and pagans enabled in the vanilla mod (no sunset though, for obvious reasons). You just won't be allowed to play as a republic or pagan, that's all. Same for muslims, they are expanded upon, just not available for you to play without Sword of Islam.

I agree with you that this game has DLC overload. It reminds me very much of Dawn of War II, Dungeon Defenders, Civilization V in that respect. Its not because the base game is incomplete though. The base game is quite great without any DLCs.

Get the whole lot in the summer sale when it will be £18 again no doubt. I dont agree with the DLC, it should be free really. But if it keeps small outfits releasing niche games that are as good as this I will buy it grudgingly in a sale as I did this time. It does add a lot of atmosphere and variety to the game, buit its probably not for everyone.

The fact is in the sale you can get the four expansions, all of the DLC and the game for under £30 in total - so that isnt bad. And it gives you a heck of a lot of playability for that money (unlike AAA games in which you will get maybe 10 hours of play for £35)

This game does dlc very well, your arguement is kinda lame. The base game is massive and a full experiance all by itself, just like civ 5 is, you never "need" the dlc. The DLC they offer are all just bonus items or adventures to add to the base game, like dlc should be. I love the facvt they are thinking up new content and adding it as dlc, come on, does anyone seriously think they held back the aztec invasion for dlc? lol, that was something someone thought about well after launch. Old Gods sold me on this game tho, just fyi.

Almost. You do have to buy Legacy of Rome to get retinues, those weren't in the patch. Also the new early start date can't be played without buying The Old Gods.

As I've said elsewhere, my only concern is that they've suddenly started upping the price otherwise I just wait for sales.

It's because they decided they want to work on this game for years to come.

Seriously, it's Paradox Interactive. If it's not a DLC, it's a mod.
la_nague Jun 22, 2013 @ 6:08pm
they made the game and expansions cheap and instead sold new graphics and music as extra DLC, thats why it is so much.
vortex_13 Jun 22, 2013 @ 8:03pm
They're expansions. The game is 2 years old and they're still adding stuff to it. One of the reasons I like Paradox and how they do DLC.
nomstar-1H Jun 22, 2013 @ 9:53pm
Like others have said, DLC helps Paradox to continue to support their games for years to come. For the player it definitely keeps the game fresh. I'll eventually lose interest, then DLC comes out and I sacrifice my sleep to the Paradox gods all over again...
Regergek Jun 22, 2013 @ 10:54pm
What is wrong with developers supporting the game with good and expansive DLCs?
Blackfish Jun 23, 2013 @ 12:22am
The devs need to eat too. The alternative to no DLCs is they stop working on CK2 altogether. It's not like you need most of the DLCs - practically the only ones you really need is Legacy of Rome (because of retinues), and the African and Mongol face packs. I just buy 'em all anyway because this is a great model for players and I want Paradox to keep working on the game.
