Why are my units so bad?
I have played CK2 for almost 170 hours, but I still do not know why my army sucks. I started as Sjäelland and formed Empire of Scandinavia. The year is 999 now. I attacked Bjarmian raiders, they had 2700-3000 units and I had bit over 5000. And I lost the battle. After that I defended against English duke, they had 6000 units while I had 7000. It doesn't make any sense.

Oh, and also, I play with CK2+ mod.

Dunno if mod is screwing you over, but there are few things I have noted that change things

1) Note the terrain. Some terrains confer bonuses when defending and enemy comes from certain county (for example, if the enemy has to cross a river to get to you, they get penalties)

2) Commanders, make sure you got the best guys leading your troops, a low Martial skilled commander will lose to a highly skilled commander, unless he has good number advantage. Also, combine armies, do not let them be small groups that can easily be beaten by united forces.

in scandinavia you probably have mostly light infantry which frankly arent very effective in most cases. its easy to forget in CK2 but yes there are different unit types and every culture also gets a unique unit with bonus stats such as housecarls and the like. army composition when horribly unbalanced can make a difference. oh and military tech also gives bonuses to your units, england has higher starting tech than scandinavia

In the second case 7000vs6000 is not a significant number advantage.
Terrain, troup types, leader stats and army morale will have a significant impact.
Nothing we can say without more details but a few general tips:
-Unless you have overwhelming numbers (i.e. x2 or more) use your best generals to lead the troops.
-Do not engage battle before your morale meter is full (levies start at 0).
-Do not assault across a river :)

Maybe you didn't have a commander in your army or he had a low martial skill, and as these guys said, note the terrain

Close battles are generally a roll of the dice. Troops types, tech, etc do make some difference but overall it's down to luck.

Make sure your morale is maxed out.

might be worth checking the skills of the enemy commander by looking him up - skills like 'unyielding' can make a huge difference.

unit type matters, 1 heavy cavalry is worth like 50 light infantry.
there are also 3 phases, being really bad in the archer phase will seriously hurt you.

generals under 7 (i think) points sabotage your army with bad tactics, i think 12 start to use better tactics.
And then there are a million traits that can make big differences.

what tactics was your army using at the time because the tactics are 70% of the battle's out come
