i like "project balance" as it doesnt change gameplay much, only changes balance.
I think they get so powerful because of money. With the sheer amount of money they make so quickly they are able to hire an enourmous amount of mercenaries.
It's not a sim? It doesn't reflect real history? Wherever did you get that idea?
Come on, we're not idiots here, please. No need to be patronising.
EDIT: sorry, didn't mean to seem harsh. Of course it's not a sim. But I do like things to be as accurate as possible without spoiling fun. Regardless, as others have said, this is also a balance issue. And by accurate, I mean vaguely within the realms of plausability :)
No harm mate, Its never going to be real history, since that would take you/us as the player, out of the equation. we would just be watching history roll by. hence its only a history sim.
back to subjekt, i just personally think that they reflect the historic republics fine, but i've never experienced them getting vastly powerfull, yes they do rival some of the big powers but thats not unlike what they did irl.
but i do really encourage some modder to nerf them, if not for me, then for the people who think they are too powerfull for an enjoyable playthrough.
All i am saying is that i dont see a problem with it, i find them to be both enjoyable to play with, and not too OP for my taste. If you dont like it, im sure theres some sort of mod out there to fix it. as you by no means it seem to be the only one, with a problem with it.
The reason I bring this up is because though I am accomplishing this due to my position as the natural De Jure liege over the area, you can usurp Duchy titles through fabricating claims. Theoretically, anyone with an interest, time, and a bit of luck can do this. At the very least, it is very cathardic for those of us who have some frustrations with the Republics at times (though I still do enjoy playing AS them, even so).
That all said, I have noticed that the introduction of Republics has definately altered the flow of gameplay. Before, there was a very good chance of Muslims holding their own, especially on the Iberian Penninsula. I had about half my games seeing them conquering the Spanish countries within a hundred or two hundred years. Now, however, the Muslims get pretty much squished nearly every time, because now the Catholics have a VERY distinct advantage over them. History aside, it is a balancing issue, and one I hope to see tweaked soon.
With any luck, introduction of the Barbarian DLC will help with this.
