Either answer the question or ignore it. This type of response is unhelpful. It's not like Steam forums are the best at search functionality. I can't even see the URL's of the discussion threads.

To address the question....

I've never tried, but someone else claims you can create them as a "Principality." In the same discussion, it's said you can't usurp an Empire, just create an Empire-level title.

You most definitely can create empires as a republic. As stated above, they are called principalities and have all the benefits of highest rank an empire has. It can be extraordinarily badass to make a principality and give all vassal kingdoms to your mayor-class designated heir. The heir's opinion of you will likely be pegged at 100, and he will pay you enormous tax (as, after all, he is a mayor)! Plus, the guy will rack up prestige, making it easier for him to win an election when he eventually tries to assassinate you. :)

They are useful as many forums are just repeats of the same topics. On top of that, some are repeats of topics that are still on the front page.

Yes, while most searches are not intuitive, if you just type in "republic empire" into the search, the first hit is all you need. 2 secs of effort, will save you a post and get you an immediate answer.

Yes. Principality. The ruler is known as Grand Prince. As stated, while you cannot usurp, you can create an empire if you hold the necessary counties and are of the correct culture (as well as gold and piety requirements).

Alternately, i managed to press the weak claim of my son during a civil war. Then when i died, got HRE with venice as one of my lesser titles.

Republic empires are colossal asspain to play - king titles you have tend to become stuck with imperail title and pass to next elected emperor instead of your dynasty member so you're reduced to duke any time you let go of the empire. Also letting AI run empire usually ends with him easily granting independence to anyone outside de jure empire land.
