they try to have the game simulate history as closely as posible, and its not really all that historical. but i guess it could happen :) i havn't seen it
It is 1154 in my first real attempt at this game and the Roman empire is the largest power, spanning from Northern Italy to Denmark. They can't seem to get control of the boot of Italy though.
Meanwhile. I have finally formed Ireland but keep getting whipped by Scotland when I try to take over the 4 northernmost counties.

he means the roman empire, not the holy roman empire.

Maybe try conquering Wales instead? Or get a strong ally to help you beat Scotland. Also, watch for civil wars in Scotland, because you may be able to take advantage of one and get land by attacking when they're weak. Scottish dukes like to rebel -- it takes quite a strong king to keep them in line.
Ah. I see about the Roman Empire now. They held France when I rage-quit after my Dukes rebelled immediately after I won my fight with Scotland but were still the holy roman empire. I am beginning to understand the mechanics a bit better, but I don't think I am using marriages for alliances very effectively. I am glad I finally got my teeth into a paradox game though. I own a few but could never get over the initial learning curve to sustain my interest due to lack of time. I am hooked now. work and family commitments be damned!

hehe same here , it's a hard game to get into and needs imagination to get the most out of it , but by god its addictive once you have learned a bit.
Getting back on track with the OP. I don't think there is ever a chance of the Roman Empire forming under the AI. The byzantines are just way too weak. In each and every game I've played they end up disintegrating. Maybe if you ally with them and involve yourself in every war they get into. Even then, I think the AI tends more towards fighting Holy Wars then creating claims on Italy. So italy would have to fall the the muslims for the Byzantine Ai to even consider expanding there.

That's right, Ireland is really nice to play after unified,I remember getting cornwall, and the duchy of the isles, and the other where you cross to scotland.

Also your dukes seen to aways want to f*ck you up as emperor, and when they get to power they just get owned.
Because of its really specific requirements and many of the required duchies being split between different realms I think it's impossible for an AI controlled Byzantium to remake the Roman Empire.
AI created Brittania and Hispania are more common than anything.

I've yet to see *any* AI created empires, in 450 hours of playing! Not counting the Mongol empires of course.

I once saw the Persian empire form although this was before the faction system worked properly. Never in nearly 1000 hours seen another empire form.

I disagree with Byzantium being weak it can if the AI can be bothered be very very strong and steamroll everyone especially if it wins the first fight against the turks. In my games Byzantium always invades Sicily and Syria assuming it does fall apart.
I've never seen an EMpire form naturally either. Not once I dont think, and ive put close to 400 hours into CK2

Ive seen Hispania, Brittania and the Persian Empire form. In the game i'm playing now Norway looks like it's about to create an empire.
I've seen Brittania form a number of times, Hispania a couple times, and Scandanavia and Francia once each. A couple times I've seen the Byzantines get close to grabbing enough of the Western Empire to reform, but in those cases they have large middle eastern holdings and get pre-occupied when the Ilkhanate shows up and never finish the job.
