Limit on Holy Wars

Does anyone know how far the limit is on holy wars? The fatmids recently took southern Greece and I am not allowed to take it back even though I am in Byzantine Empire and technically closer than they are.

why wouldnt you be allowed to holy war as long as your christion of some kind and their muslim you can declare war just make sure your cliqing on the fatmids emperor and not his vassel then cycle through his territorys for what you want to take declare war then keep doing it tell youve conquered what you want remember truces with heathons dont count

The new patch has placed a limit on who you can declare holy wars on, the target is now out of my "range".
I see what paradox were trying to do but it hasn't worked. It now just restricts smaller states rather than limiting the HRE and Republics as was intended.

I ran into that problem myself. I can't remember if it made sense or not in my case, but I think I heard somewhere that it was "bordering." Now, this sounds super unlikely and almost funny ... but did the Fatimids have a holding (not a county, but a city/bishopric/barony) in one of those counties? Lol Um, could be that Muslims have a ... wider range? Now I wanna get to the bottom of it.

No, the fatmids can always attack Southern Greece.
I don't think the limit has actually worked all it does is restrict smaller nations and have no effect on the HRE, the Republics etc.
It basically stops you doing what Paradox says you can do in the game manuel
