Crusader Kings II
How hard is this game?
Hello! I have a massive interest in this game, but i have never played a game like it before. Is there a good tutorial? Does the game punish you a lot? Can i be an atheist lord?

Thanks.

The tutorial sucks big monkey balls. But you will learn more from guides and youtube let's play anyway.

You cant be an atheist, but you can become a heretic
I start play this game without any tutorial but its easy only on the easiest game mode:)
Hm..i really want to try it...guess i can download the demo and think about it.
When the new expansio, The Old Gods, comes out you will be able to play a pagan.

Really looking forward to pillaging Europe as a viking.
the game has a LOT of depth to it, and the tutorial is infact complete crap - but if you are willing to go through it, and are willing to spend a lot of time doing trial and error - then yes, you might enjoy it.

You can not be atheist, and yes - the game does punish you - a lot.
If you want to learn how to play the game then go to youtube & look up malakith skadi & whatch his irish campaign
The game does punish you, yes. But it's part of the fun! For me, at least, it's one of the few games where it's possible to enjoy it even as your realm crumbles to pieces around you and you scrabble to hold together what's left.
Hmmm. Do the ingame tutorial so you might get an understanding of the game and then you cann follow up with these guides:

http://www.reddit.com/r/Games/comments/19hbj4/when_people_bring_up_crusader_kings_ii_many/

http://guides.gamepressure.com/crusaderkingsii/

I still haven't started playing. I am still reading about the game.
Yeah as others have said the tutorial for this game is terrible (in fact when one of my friends was recently trying to learn it would constantly crash and he couldn't even finish it), but if you can manage to figure the game out the hard way it's definitely worth the effort. What I found most helpful was to watch Let's Plays on youtube (Try looking up Quill18, he has a somewhat long game in Castille that, while not actually a tutorial, helps to see the game in action). You can't be an Atheist in this game, but given the time period Atheists were pretty rare and did not get on well. Also when you do start the game you may want to start in Ireland, it's the easiest place to learn the game. Dublin's probably your best bet.
Thanks for the tips. Is it easier to start as a King or a lower ranking title?
Can i have my wife dragged after a horse if i caught her with another man?
King is easy -if- your vassals like you and your dynasty is decently large enough, but King can also be brutally challenging if your vassals are good enough or hate you enough to screw you over. An unskilled player in the HRE, France, or England can very easily find themselves as a Duke in short order due to factions rebelling against him or her. England at the start date is considered quite impossible because both Duke William to the south and King Harald to the east are gunning for your throne and start off in a war with you. Historically, you get dethroned, and Duke William takes over after he beats you. Little more than half the time, that's what will end up happening. Some of the time, Norway will win and England will be Norwegian for a while until York, Sussex, or Lancaster rebels. (which generally happens if the Norwegians keep the English throne for any length of time). Very rarely will England remain under King Harold. Your chances improve immensely if you can get the Duke and the King of Norway's armies to fight each other, but short of that, you're totally screwed.

Many people start as King or Emperor, and then eventually move on to starting as a duke, and then onto starting as a count. (Count is very challenging, and can end -very- quickly.

Good starting Kingdoms are Denmark (at the earliest possible start date), Poland, or one of the various Spanish Kingdoms like Leon, Castile, or Galacia. (Avoid Aragon or Navarra.. they're somewhat harder for a new player, and Navarra can be extremely challenging to the unskilled... sort of like playing as a duke surrounded by a bunch of kings who can easily unite around each other, ally each other, and screw over anyone that screws with any of them. Not to mention Navarra is a frequent French target)

Regarding killing your wife: There's a lot of ways to do it. It's one of the standard plots you can perform and the game will occasionally encourage you to do it. If your wife ever develops the 'chaste' trait, you need to kill her -immediately- or else she won't produce heirs for you and your game will be over. The easiest, but most risky and expensive way is to pay for assassination on the spot, but most people just start up a plot and invite some people to help.

You have little control over the 'how' of her dying if you 'plot' to kill her. One of your conspirators will offer up some plan after a period of time. Assination generally succeeds via poison, and you'll be presented with the 'chance of success' when you select assasinate before you have to pay money and make the attempt. If you fail, the game will roll a discovery chance to see if it can be connected back to you. If you fail -that- check too, she knows -you- tried to kill her and will hate you. She may even attempt to kill you in response, or one of her family members may declare war on you. Killing your wife can be hard, particularly if she's skilled in intrigue, but it's very possible and occasionally encouraged.
I found myself in similar situation about a week ago its a very hard game. Stick with it. Game mechanics are what you need to get to grips with. Youtube tutorials are long and boring but there are good ones that teach you how to start a campaign off and you can find info in them thats hard to find any where else.

But a really good reference guide is below

http://crusaderkings-two.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Strategy_Guides

You can search for most things on this site.

Here is my two second summary of how to get a good start.
Marry good nobles (maybe claimants too), fabricate claims with chancellor, keep vassels happy with marriage and getting them to tutor your kids, build buildings that increase levy size first, change succesion law to Primogeniture and send all your sons other than heir to the church (make them bishops, this should make succession crisis less likely.) Start in Ireland as you will have no big rivals.
Other people might say different but this is the way i got a good start on my first proper game.
But there are a million ways the game can go.

Played the demo for about 90 minutes...like the short tutorials, but playing the game is quite hard...and i failed to asassinate my wife 2 times in a row xD
