I almost always go for world domination, but usually end up leaving the game halfway through when things get boring. Actually, I've only achieved total domination twice.

I'm quite content. I just want to form the kingdom or empire that I start out in and that's good enough for me. World domination would take alot more time and effort then I'm willing to put in to it.

World domination would get really boring really fast. I usually go for 150 to 200 years, which is about how long it takes me to become so powerful no one even tries to fight me anymore. Once that happens there's not much to worry about and I'm able to defeat literally everyone on the map, so then there's no challenge to it and I stop.

The closest I've come to world domination is trying to set up a spanish mediterranean for eu4. As most of the other posters seem to be saying it isn't as much fun when you are really powerful. The most memorable moments are usually the tense ones in the very beginning when you are fighting for life and dynasty rather than gobbling up land as a superpower.

Super Powers vs super powers I found the most fun ie 20k + armys going each other. The starting empires in the game are challenge to take down but after that only the hordes give the thrill to take out but there usually time between invasions to grab more land for more troops for next invasion. Being frankish or ere culture gives you best units though. The persian/mongol type not bad either. Playing as zoroastian is tricky as you got kill the arab empire before the first mongol invasion happens around 960 or so. Not cool when they appear right at door step if not agrresive enough.

@markdb92

Now that you mention it (middle east) participating in a crusade as a superpower is considerably more rewarding. As Ireland I felt like a flea on dogs back after scouring my realm for little more than 10k men. Ruling an empire with the potential for as many as 120k men under arms changes everything. You are braver than I am regarding your starting location; I'm a slow burn builder and rushing into conflict with the middle east strikes me as terrifying.

I am going right now for world domination, and it is a lot of fun. Currently there are no major wars outside of realms, because the world is basically divided between my large Irish Catholic realm and a large Bedouin Shia realm. Once my current ruler has established himself, I will probably go for world war. Or I wait till they are busy with the first Mongol Horde. The second horde will probably hit me.
Btw I started 867 and am now in 1176.

@horrid once you do take out muslim empire as the persians your religion head goes lets do a great holy war on the roman empire boy thats fun. It funny as hell when mr head targets kingdom of greece with the best capital in the whole game and I dont have seige it all to win the war. If I do kick the romans down I should have about 100 years or so to prepare for pope invasions cause he wants his presious holy land.

I always work with more short term goals in mind, I like to start as small as possible and work my way up to greatness. So world domination is never in my mind.

I actually stat every games with short term goals, eventualy ending up with global domination. Muslims and even more Vikings are way too easy to play like that. Playing with mechant republic, I focuss more on revenues, but it ends the same, just harder for christians...

World domination through outright conquest or by my family ruling everything is usually the goal for me. I have never finished a game or conqurored the world after 1700 hours +.
I get bored if it isn't challenging and my pc cannot take long games only managed 1267 from the 1067 start.

it is only fun to go for world domination if you some powerfull opponents (battles of 40K each FTW).

It's never another empire that takes me out, it's always civil war.

I avoid filling my realm with priest dukes, because it is just too easy with them. I mean, you basically never have to fear a rebellion.
