What is the hardest challenge you can tell with only Old Gods DLC?..

I would try the Karen Shahdom (which is near all of the Muslims, and is itself Zoroastrian). If you're looking for Catholic or Pagan stuff, consider Asturias (northern Spain), or one of the smaller Pagan states in Northern Scandinavia.

There is a county somewhere in or just around Brittany which at the 867 starting date is pagan, and thus completely sorrounded by christians. I don't remember if it a vassal of Brittany proper or not, but it can't be easy either way.

If you mean Haesteinn, he is one of the most powerful count level characters in 867. He has event troops and ships - he can work his destiny to his own kingdom almost anywhere.

East Anglia.

I was going to say that also. In most of my games in Old Gods start, East Anglia is gone but once in a while the Saxons win that part of the invasion(s) and East Anglia is still around. But whenever I play East Anglia it ends up as a very quick end.

i would still say karen shahdom, because gameplay as zoroastrian is confusing at first and if your not from the middle east, you ll have a hard time remembering the names of your people and or titles at first(yeah i m dumb, but it really did make playing karen harder for me)

east anglia is pretty hard though, but silly mistakes are harder to make when you understand what you re doing and to whom

Navarra can also be fun. Or one of the muslims in Italy.

What about Turkic challenges? It would be nice to challenge myself as one of my ancestors.

Isn't there a count that's a Eunic with no heirs? Sounds like the hardest start to me.
