How to conquer Egypt?
As Krete? I've played 2 generations still only have the 2 provinces in the island under my control but I was able to get independence from Byzantium which is my biggest accomplishment so far.

But getting anything started in egypt seems impossible they don't want anything to do with me because of religion and I don't have the manpower or money to fund a war with them and all their allies.

I'm thinking next I should try allying myself with Byzantium in order to take them down. What should I do?

I think you should have stayed with the Byzantines and tried to lower crown authority. Then you could attack other counts and grow in strength.

I was doing that at first but the the emperors somehow always just brought it back up to medium CA right after a faction war. So I decided to take my chances during a major rebellion and decalre independence.

If I swear fealty what's to stop the emperors from changing CA to medium whenever they want?

Can you declare a holy war? If you could, wait till a civil war starts in Egypt, and declare a holy war on one of the duchies thats fighting against the king.

Alternatively, you could take the slower route and expand your influence through marriage in the empire. Taking on whoever owns Egypt without taking advantage of a civil war would be hard, just owning two counties as you do. But possible, I suppose.

Another thought for you – keep an eye out for decadence revolts in Egypt which could work in your favor. The AI often struggles with those. Even if the current Sultan loses, the new Sultan will have a severe short reign penalty, which will often trigger a civil war immediately after. In all that chaos you may very well be ignored enough to win some Egyptian emirates on warscore. Consider well-placed assassinations that might maneuver people to the Sultancy who have higher decadence for this reason.

Whatever you do, keep In mind that holding Egypt won’t be easy without powerful friends, or even more powerful enemies bearing down on the region. I have seen the Muslim world rally together very effectively at times, and that is a lot of people to fight all at once, as nation starting with two provinces.

Happy hunting!
