Crusader Kings Start Problems
I just bought Crusader Kings 2, and I encountered several problems with starting it. I have downloaded several things to help it get started, but now that I have finally gotten it to start, Windows sends a popup saying that CK2 has stopped working, but it does not give any reasons for it. If anybody knows anything about this or has had problems like this before, that would be great. Thanks

I recently had the game crashing on me too. For me it's the steam overlays fault. After I disabled it it works great again

Yes, try disabling the steam community in game for CK2--it should work like a charm. If you had gotten DLCs too, and they weren't working, they should work after you disable the community.

I believe when I got this I had to update DirectX or something, there's a thread right next to this one that had someone with a similar problem.

Disabling teh Steam Community Overlay is only necessary on Mac, not Windows.

On Windows, Please try installing:

First: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=5555

After that: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=8328

Then: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35
(If that doesn't do anything then http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8109 )

Then: visit the Windows Update site and allow it to apply all .NET updates/patches it wants to, for all .NET versions.

Yes I will confirm that you need to disable the steam overlay on mac, as I use a mac, and that's what fixed my CK2.

I try installing from the links you provided, but was told I cannot as I already have newer versions.. Issue with starting CK2 persists. Is there another way, or something I missed?
Aeon Maximus Feb 19 @ 9:31am
So here's what I did:

(1) Clicked through all links provided by supplican; some did not install as I already have newer versions.
(2) Updated all the .NET, C++, for Windows (I have Vista).
(3) Right-Clicked on CK2 and CK2GAME file and in Compatibility Tab I've clicked "Disable Desktop Composition", and "Run as Admin".
(4) Updated drivers for Video Card (I have GeForce GTC 560 Ti).
(5) I even tried to run it in "640x480" resolution (see step 3).

I don't know what else I can do. I get the brown hourglass 'loading' forever, then "Program Stops Running". I also see "Windows color scheme changed" when I run the game presumably from step (5).

Please help me find a solution. It is terribly frustrating...

Has it ever worked for you on this machine, or not? If so try a full clean re-install:

- move any valued save games elsewhere
- "delete local files" in Steam
- manually delete all files and folders left under Steam/CK2 AND Documents/CK2
- re-install game in Steam, run a verify when done.

Thank you for getting back on this.
CK2 never worked on this machine. I just purchased it and just signed up with Steam.
- what is the location of the "delete local files" in Steam? Please guide me on this.
I re-installed CK2 yesterday but without all the clean up so I will do that now.

Can you give us your specs, as nothing else seems to work?
Aeon Maximus Feb 20 @ 6:31pm
Intel Core i7 920 @2.67GHz
12Gb RAM
64-bit OS
GeForce GTC 560 Ti Video Card
Sound Card is generic I think...
Monitor is HP w2558hc so all resolutions should work
Windows Vista Ultimate

Did you look? It's right there ... but since it's never worked on this machine Please try installing:

First: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=5555

I've already ran the links (see previous post), but I'm re-running them again. Got the following messages:

*** "A newer version of Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable has been detected on the machine."
*** "Same or higher version of .NET Framework 4 Client Profile has already been installed on this computer."
*** "DirectX setup has determined that a newer or equivalent version of DirectX has been installed already. No installation is necessary."

For your last link, ending in "8109" it asks for a folder to drop all the files. I did that in a generic folder and ran DXSETUP. It looks like it downloaded a bunch of DLLs I didn't see before.

No Windows updates were found.

>>>Aeon: I'm assuming you mean here to delete all files from Steam/CK2. Is that the right assumption? Otherwise, you mean to delete all files from the Steam folder? That wouldn't make sense to me...

I'm re-installing CK2 now and will let you know if it works. Fingers crossed...

CK2 is still not loading... :-(

I have also clicked on "Disable Desktop Composition" and "Run as Admin".

What else can I do? Is there a log I can look at for why it's not loading?... I'm out of ideas.
Please help...

I've also Validated the Integrity of the Game Cache with no issues.
The game will not initialize.
