So... the hero can't attack?
Then why did I pick the Warrior class for him! >_>

Weeeell, there is technically the ability which comes from Valk' amulet that lets your hero attack, and it will work better for the Warrior because he has greater advantages using the amulet. But yeah, the differences between classes lie deeper than just being able to attack personally.

I don't remember these games well, but doesn't him being a warriror change bonuses the units get from him, or other things?

Warriors have high leadership so more troops to give and soak up damage. There's some other things they get bonuses on, and the primary runes they get are effected of course.

different classes gets different gems when level up. Warrior will have most of red ones, wizard blue ones and paladin(?) green ones. That determine skills you will have and that determine bonuses for all units you have (red tree means high attack/defense/rage, blue means more mana/hero spell dmg, ...)

The Magician is the better choice in this game, you can activate powerful magic, magic wipe out entire units
