Is Bill Gilbert named after the UK game cracker and programmer?
I remember back in the days when I played ZX Spectrum games in early 90s many of the games on casette compilations had "Bill Gilbert" name at the loading screen. Then when I asked in the forums at WorldofSpectrum site people said he was a famous game hacker or programmer or something like that. Either way, it was a vague answer. Anyone know how it got into this game?

Hm, there isn't much known of Bill Gilbert. From what I read, he's not from UK, but actually from Poland (at least he lived there in 90-es), and he used to hack a lot of ZX Spectrum games and remove copyright protection from them, thus making them available to vast arrays of people. I don't know for sure, but I think that his name was included into the series as a tribute to those times. Sort of an easter egg for nostalgic speccy gamers.

That makes sense. According to official 1C site 1C Publishing is located in Czech Republic, according to Wikipedia it has headquarters in Moscow. Whichever it is, since it is there near Poland it cannot be a coincidence that Bill Gilbert is a character name in this game. I mean what are the odds?

I wish someone from 1C saw this and told more about it, just for history's sake, or for that guy's sake, wherever he is.

If what he did is remove copyright protection from games to distribute and pirate them (not sure if with Speccy games it was ever an issue like with today's games) it explains how I saw his name. In early 90s I was in Ukraine buying casettes with bunches of ZX Spectrum games on them. Naturally they were all unauthorized copies of games elsewhere in Europe, but that's how it was then. Some games had Bill Gilbert's name on them. Oh well.
