Legend was first, then came Armored Princes, follow up with Crossworlds expansion (buy crosswords as it is the same game with few more campaigns) and WotN last. Most players agree that the Crossworlds is the best installment of the KB series.
i got the this game when it was on sale. didnt get the other ones, nor do i plan to.

i dont understand why people feel like they have to play everything that has come out previously for getting into a new series.

Well, while it's not required to play this series in order of appearance, I think it's a natural way to do since the storylines of installments are based on that of previous ones, and it's easier to blend with the world if you understand references to the previous episodes. So I think that playing series in order makes the playing more enjoyable.
playing these in order made it much more enjoyable to me.

love revisiting old locations and characters, its like seeing an old friend after many years passed.

the biggest flaw in this game was taking away companions and their 4 item slots, really limits the strategy and having so much loot i cant equip drives me crazy.

It doesn't always follow that the latest game in a series is the best one.
yeah the latest one almsot seems to be a step back in program functionality. the graphics engine seems alot sloppier than the crossworlds game.
you can skip armored princess and play crossworlds main campaign, as it includes all AP content.
Question was answered in the first reply. You will notice that if you buy crossworlds there are a couple of expansions you can enable for the first two games. These are very worthwhile as you should play with all the content turned on. It gets a little confusing with a couple of the modes crossworld adds as they mix the campaign add-ins and the stand alone minigames on the same menu. They could work on making it less ambiguous.

That said, these games are all wonderful. Very enjoyable time burners. Not rocket science but fun to play in small bites. They are quite LONG also. You'll get dozens of ours out of each game.
