OMG the 3D!
The Tomb Raider games have been extra fun in stereoscopic 3D and not just because of Lara's <ahem> pop-out potential. All those high jumps become way more impressive when it really looks like you're high off the ground. This game adds something else, too: clausterphobic little tunnels to squeeze through! The effect is really impressive.

I realize few people here have 3D Vision or AMD's stereoscopic solution but the Oculus Rift isn't all that far away. Keep this game handy if you're planning to get one of those because, if they can make the game compatible with Rift, you'll be in for a treat!

The Rift doesn't cover your mouth and the cost of a bucket is nothing compared to the cost of the Rift. So what are you griping about? ;)

Seriously, though, the developers are working on that aspect pretty hard. When you turn your head and the world lags behind for a half second, it can make you pretty sick pretty fast. It's not just resolution they are working on, tracking lag time is in there, too. I think head bobbing effects might be in there, too.

P.S. My question isn't how you got your hands on a Rift... my question is how you dug up this topic from back in September!?

[end quote] Lol dunno why its making out this bit is quoted..oh well..
FPS games like minecraft, skyrim etc are amazing for the rift, however 3rd person, spesh games that dont use steady cams, are known to cause sea sickness :(

Lol you can buy one from their website for $300. However, you're officialy buying it as a developer :( So theres going to be bugs and its not a finished product. Im very tempted to buy one but im still in two minds.

Ah, it's not [end quote] it's [\quote] (only the slash goes the other way)

Yeah, I've heard of troubles with 3rd person though I don't really understand why. Seems like it would be pretty much the same as playing with a puppet. I guess not, though? Honestly, finding out why things like that happen will probably be half the fun of one of them, anyway.

I'm not about to mess with one yet. I might even try to resist the first wave of systems that show up. But I've got my 3D Vision to keep me out of Flatland. (And maybe I'll still need it post Rift. Console gamers aren't going to be giving up third person any time soon.)

Lol i put [end quote] to show that it was the end of the quote :( i tried the \quote thing but it wasn't working. Think it bugged out :\ strange never happened before lol

Whats 3d vision like? I have a pretty good 3d tv (£1200 on sale from £1600) and gaming on the ps3/watching 3d movies is awful. Is 3d vision anybetter?

3D movies aren't very good. The technology just isn't one that can work very well when it has to work for everyone in a theater. When you set it up for just one person and you give that one person some controls to fine tune it the way he wants, it gets really impressive. Something that's miles away will look like it's miles away. Something that is supposed to look like it's one foot away will pop up out of the screen to one foot in front of your nose.

It's not without problems, though. Some games take shortcuts with graphics that work just fine in 2D but look horrible in 3D. (Moving hair, for instance, is sometimes done by putting flat panels on a person's head then essentially projecting a little movie of hair waiving around on the panels instead of actually having tens of thousands of hair strands actually responding to wind force.) Clicking on distant objects (like trying to select the enemy to attack with the mouse in Dragon Age) can get really difficult, too, because the mouse pointer is trapped at screen depth.

When it works, though... wow. It's like the difference between looking at a photograph and looking out your window. MTBS has a decent list[www.mtbs3d.com] of what games work well in 3D and what games don't.

It's available for 3D TVs via something called 3D TV Play but I never looked into that side of it much. You'll need to make sure the TV is compatible with the software. You can look it all up on NVIDIA's website[www.nvidia.com].

Never really been a 3d movie type of guy and never will mainly for the reasons you say. But gaming has always appealed to me. I've seen gaming 3d tech demos that truly blew me away. As you describe things that are miles away LOOK miles away. This was one of the reasons i bought a 3D tv in the first place. I've even used expensive software to calibrate the TV for the best 3d effect.. Lol just never found ANYTHING thats given me the "WOW This looks amazing" feeling. I'm a Pc gamer at heart and know how much better they are than consoles (hardware wise) So i've always wondered if 3d would be better on the pc over a 8yo console. Lol I never knew about the 3dtv thing. Im just downloading the Demo now! Cheers for that! Gunna give it a try and ill report back ;) :D PLEase excuse typos. im typing this through a s4 phone lol

Wow..I've just tried it out on TomB raider (2013) and..wow lol! Thats a bit more like it ;). I don't know if i could play for long using 3d due to the 24hz (Gives it a bit of lag and drag :( ) However im going to try out a few other games as soon as they download. A Big thank you Zioth for pointing me in the direction of 3dTVplay :D

Edit: I've just noticed you can lower the res and increase the refresh rate. Lol 20x better! Much more fluid action.. however i had to stop after 10 mins as i started feeling very sea-sick. :( Guess ill have to either 1: Get used to it or 2: Turn depth and str down and work my way up

Left that off my list, didn't I? Rendering for two eyes means you have to render two pictures to get one... uhh... frame. I'm not sure how the terminology is supposed to work out but basically, your framerate gets almost halved.

Make sure there's no depth of field going.

I'd heard that ages ago when i first bought the tv (That the framerate is halved) but didn't think it was going to make that much diffirence >< lol It was 100% fine when i changed it to 720p.
I had depth set to half and Strength set to just over half. Should i completely remove depth?
Zloth Dec 28, 2013 @ 3:55pm
I don't know. It's called depth and convergence in the NVIIDIA software. You might try setting depth at 30% or so, that's what the NVIDIA default is. I cranked it up to 100% after about a week. The settings really depend on how far you are away from the TV and how big the TV is, though.
ReO Dec 28, 2013 @ 4:01pm
Guess its just trial and error? The tv's 46 inches and its about 7ft away (2.13m) Im just downloading trine and Just cause 2. As soon as they're downloaded il gunna start playing with it lol Even after playing tomb raider for 10mins in 3d.. Its damn hard to go back to 2d ><
skpManiac Dec 28, 2013 @ 4:55pm
Totally agree - I have it in 3D on 3D projector - basically the screen in IMMERSIVE to say the least ;)

Another great Game in 3D is Bulletstorm ;)
