too much killing?
Looking at the e3 trailer, it doesn't look like a TR game at all. Lara running around slaughtering people right and left. Have they left the TR gameplay behind in favor of just another action killing game?

Yes, it is a lot more about combat than any previous TR game.

they could have changed the main character's name and called this game something else. it's nothing like any other TR game. it's just another 3rd person shooter with some basic puzzles. especially all the tiny little tomb ruins you find really just feels like they knew they had to include something other than laura to be able to call it Tomb Raider. if you play this game thinking it isn't a tomb raider game you'll enjoy it a lot, but if you play it expecting it to be "Tomb Raider" then you'll be upset.

True this game does not feel like a regular Tomb Raider game. But you have to remember that the game is based on Lara's first adventure, she is stranded on an island full of maniacs and has to fight for her survival using basic weapons and gear and NOT explore old tombs for treasures. That is where the difference is, this game is before she became a tomb raider.

it doesn't matter that it's before she became a tomb raider, this is a 3rd person shooter with a cover system and combat skill trees. that's not even including the stapled on multiplayer thats fits nowhere in the TR universe. this game isn't a prequel to the games we have now, it's the beginning of something else not related to the already established franchise. it doesn't fit from the first moment you start killing people as the first human character that laura kills in the original is an extremely traumatic experince for her, lol. this game fits nowhere in the established franchise and is something completely seperate from all other TR games. hell, even GoL fits better than this and it's a top-down arcade shooter. thats not saying this game is bad, it's actually quite good, but it's not tomb raider.

well, the latest james bond films do also not feel like james bond films. but the people like them anyway. the show must go on. :)

This could have been more TR-like if they had toned down the killing and played up the tombs and exploration. It's a good game, but all the gore makes it depressing and I have no desire to return to play it a 2nd time...
Von Pink Jun 9, 2013 @ 4:53pm
lol, that's a bit different. if they had made james bond into a hitman then maybe it would be closer to the same level of change, but the old vs the new bond films are still the same genre.

well it needed to be, the last tomb raiders weren't selling like they needed to be, this has solved it, plus it is like uncharted, which is excellent, action, adventure :)

People will always be unhappy about something in games. The game is unlike other TR games, nobody can deny that. But as mentioned, the last TR games were unlike the TR games people loved as well. So it is a change but not necessarily a bad one. I do agree, though, that the exploring came too short.

not really, they could have easily just called the game something else and it would have been fine. and you're absolutle right, the game is like uncharted, which is NOTHING like any TR game, lol. that's why TR 2013 should not have been in the TR family of games. it should have been a different title. it's as if they only used the name to boost sales. imagine what people would say and think if the next CoD came out and the gameplay was like XCOM... they would be saying the same thing and be absolutely right about it.

No, it's the best one yet. You can't repeat the same format over and over again, the world changes, the audience has changed and, as Sam said, the audience demands content ;) Despite the high bodycount they have made a turn into the right direction.

You call it slaughtering, I call it survival. I agree though, more exploration and puzzle-solving would have been appreciated.

What level of change you're talking about? Lara is still running, jumping, climbing and killing enemies. Just because there are more enemies doesn't mean all other components went away. The only thing that is different is that now not every room has a puzzle.

James Bond movies changed much more drastically.
