Nvidia Madness
So I'm running this game on my WinXP/250 GTS. It was tough to find someone that didn't have a 5xx-6xx Nvidia card but you're telling me that --

Alien Swarm
Aliens: Colonial Marines
Amnesia: The Dark Descent
Anno 2070
Borderlands 2
Crusader Kings 2
Dangerous Waters
Dead Island
ES5: Skyrim
Endless Space
Evochron Mercenary
Farcry 1 + 2 + 3
F.T.L.
Gratuitous Space Battles
Hearts of Iron 2 + 3
Legend of Grimrok
Natural Selection 2
Nexus: Jupiter Incident
Mechwarrior Online
R.U.S.E.
Simcity 4
Silent Hunter 4
Sins of a Solar Empire + ALL OF THEM
Stronghold + ALL OF THEM
Splinter Cell 3
Torchlight 1 + 2
Tribes: Ascend
Warhammer - Dawn of War 1 (all expansions) + Dow2 (all exps) + SPACE MARINE
World in Conflict 1 + Soviet Assault
X3 + Terran Conflict + Albion Prelude
-----------------------------------------------------------------
ALL OF WHICH RUN PERFECTLY STABLE AND WITHOUT CONSTANT CRASHES
and yet the new Tomb Raider (2013) I can't run it for more than a few seconds before it hard-locks and I have to hit the reset on my tower...

This is just after whatever pathetic 'patch' or update Steam just dl'ed in the last hour.

So, does anyone have any suggestions. That "uncheck Tesselation etc." doesn't matter as I'm running XP and there are no DX10/11 features available.
Current drivers are 314.07 -- Tried the game at 314/310/307 - no change at all.
Render API = 9
Windowed/Fullscreen (exclusive was always unchecked) etc.
No difference
HARD LOCK at random intervals.

I've seen cases where a certain combination of hardware was to blame. Each part individually had no issues, but together they crashed particular games (eg. motherboard chipset didn't like certain video cards when games used specific graphic techniques). Hard to diagnose, and who is ultimately responsible for something like that?

Computers are magic boxes full of pain.

Thanks for your response but it's still driving me nuts as the game (when it works) looks great and runs smooth as butter. But it will lock up and force a hard boot which does not make any damn sense.

I forgot to add that I have Crysis 1-3 which run smooth and look great. A further mystery.

finished the game with my gtx 580 on maximum settings without (!) crashes. Temperature maximum 40°C - win8 64bit, driver version: 306.97
Must be something else as the common "uah its the gpu manufacturer"-discussions. Incompatibilities or hardware damage maybe?

Got crashes too. Rare... ish. But I expect that of most games these days. Given I just bought Sim Citty and we know how that's impossible to play still, I'm just glad there weren't any game-breaking problems with it.

As for your problem, sorry. Try installing the newest Nvidia driver and see if that helps.

Another example just popped to my mind: i had a gtx 295 a while ago, which crashed after short time in 3-4 games (i play a LOT of different games, so about 1 of 100 games) while others worked fine. The reason was it simply uses a technique the other games didnt use. And something on the card was broken which caused it to crash (and also produce a lot of heat). After sending the card back, i got a new one (same card) -> worked without any problems. I encountered that problem with an AMD card too btw... I dont think anyone of the two is the better one or generaly to blame.

@IceReaper -- Yeah that's probably what it is. Just some thing that isn't working with the rest. Well I've been looking for a reason to upgrade and this game is a fine reason to do so. Thank you all for your help.

Now it's Windows 7/new mobo. $55 for 2 4gb sticks? sold!

Your PC is pathetic, brah. Your O/S is ancient, and your card was low-range 5 years ago.

are you thick mate its amd new tressfx thats doing all the damage for nvidia users and nvidia didnt get the final code for the game till monday give them time to write code for there virsion of graphic cards you ♥♥♥♥♥♥

All that games are old and were patched many times, just wait for patches for TR
Nemesis82F Mar 9, 2013 @ 10:50am
ugh theres always one person that complains about being able to run games on entirely different engines than the one game they're QQing about. Different engines = different code = different programmers/development teams. Also AMD worked closely with the developers of TR to perfect TressFX tech and incorporate it into a game therefore it only makes sense that the game will be better optimized at launch for AMD users. I am playing the game at 60fps with settings maxed out at ultimate, FXAA, exclusive fullscreen enabled, TressFX enabled on:

AMD Phenom II x6 1100T 3.0Ghz Turbocore disabled, Cool n Quiet disabled
(2) Radeon 6970s in crossfire with 4GB total of VRAM
16GB of RAM (tho game will only use 4GB, i have overkill ram because I program and do lots of photoshop and video editing)
...oh and windows 7, DX11 ftw.

They already patched the game for optimized performance on intel/nvidia and I am pretty sure more patches will come in the future. But please in the future do your homework and upgrade man. Windows XP is obsolete now.

btw tressfx may not be exclusive to AMD, they are considering of making it an open project.

I'm not sure where people are getting the idea that it *is* exclusive (even PC Gamer today said it was proprietary). Because, what I read of it before launch was that it was open and used non-proprietary hardware.

So, if you have a credible source saying that it's proprietary or closed, I'd like to see it, please.
BaPef AmHeh Mar 9, 2013 @ 12:20pm
Not proprietary, just developed by AMD on AMD hardware so they have a head start in their driver optimizations... it flops back and forth periodically with various graphics technology. Thats why I have a desktop with AMD Phenom II 1075 X6 with dual 6770s & 8 gigs ram and a laptop Intel I7 3720 with an Nvidia 670M 16 Gigs RAM. Pretty much any game will run well on atleast one system if not both, once it finishes installing I will get to see which runs it better :-)

Same type of problem of yours, though not exact. My 2 GTX580's would play any game well except for Dragon Age 2, Deus Ex, and The Secret World the system would crash randomly. Either hard lock, or the application would just crash, or it would say the driver recovered, or some other random crash, or wouldn't crash at all. My problem was a voltage setting on both of my video cards. Took over a year to figure this out.

And even though when I started troubleshooting the voltage route, the programs I was using to increase the voltage were not setting the voltage to both cards, even though the program said it was, and the programs own monitors showed the selected voltage were running the voltage I set. But another application I ran disagreed and showed only 1 card was running the correct voltage.

And even though I turned off SLI, still would crash randomly. I think I tried like 4 different voltage changing applications, none of which worked. But eventually Afterburner was updated to work properly. Was quite a learning experience, and now I know exactly what is wrong, and how to tell if it is working properly or not.

I'm running with a 4GB NV 680 (OCed to 1350Mhz) and an i7 Oced to 4.7ghz.. Win 8x64 with 16GB of Ram. I've never had a crash one. My partner has an IDENTICLE machine but has the 2GB version of the 680 and has all these issues that many NV gamers have... I have the game on every max setting, except I use FXAA.. never had a single crash... I bet the nvidia bug has to due with Tesselation and tressfx taking up too much texture memory.

Oh and for anyone with SLI or xfire.. please don't list your TOTAL video memory as that is NOT accurate. In SLI or Xfire, even if you have 2 2GB cards, it may take up 4GB of physical address space, but you only have 2GB for framebuffering as each card is doing rendering for sli/xfire... the memory of the multiple cards do NOT "pool" together to give you over all more texture memory... that's why we are seeing 4 and 6GB video card emerging.
