It is far away from being as good as Silent Assassin, Contracts or Blood Money.
In my opinion, even Codename 47 is better if we put ourselves at the point and time the game came out.
I'm used to call the game : Splinterman Ex: Arkham Revolution.
It's a bad mashup of AAA titles. It's a w*o*e game...
Eidos wrote an open letter to the fans acknowledging the fact that, obviously, the game isn't a real Hitman experience. By talking about the next game, they severly criticised Absolution in their own ways. Just take the time to look at it, you will understand clearly. I could make quotations, like I usually do, but the open letter says it all shortly enough:http://hitman.com/open-letter-to-hitman-fans/?age-verified=2230a723d9
Here's my personnal list of the things that have changed that I mostly dislike and "like"...
-Lack of map
-Lack of Sniper Case (Magic Pockets!)
-Can't close the light
-Can't close the doors
-The FOV is too low
-Over-the-Shoulder perspective (OTS and TPS are really different and the OTS view sucks. Great TPS : Max Payne, Hitman, GTA... Bad TPS with OTS: RE4, Hitman 5, Warframe...)
-You can't chose between TPS/FPS which you could do before.
-The levels are freaking small
-The level design is awefull (Garbages everywhere is the proof)
-Instinct (Bad because it's been implemented because of the small level design and removed the oh-so-usefull minimap. It's gimmicky and uninspired, they took the idea from DX:HR and Batman Arkham).
-Targeting System (Just like Splinter Cell, DX:HR and Batman. I want to play Hitman, not a bad copy and mashup of other games.)
-Checkpoints replaced the Save System. It's not an improvment. At all.
-The Score system ruins the game
-Lack of old-school scoring (Silent Assassin-Murderer-Psychopathe and many others.)
-QTE... nothing more to say.
-The disguise system just don't work.
-Bad AI. (Disguise system and if you kill someone and they didn't see you, they still know you're the killer for some reasons. Even if disguised...)
-You can't chose your weapons at the beginning of a mission
-Lack of weapon cache/collection
-You can't lean your body which you could do in Blood money. That was an improvement from other games. Absolution regressed.
+Graphics (Light effects, crowd generator)
+Voice acting (If only the story was good...)
+You can drag people with the fibre wire
+You can hide 2 bodies in garbages (whch can be found everywhere because of the bad level design) and closets.
+The contracts mode was a great idea. (But not the scoring system)
The thing to say is that these "Improvements" could have been implemented even within a classic Hitman style of gameplay with better and bigger levels anyway...
=The cover System (Still, it make the game like all other TPS...)
=Throwing objects (But you could throw coins in Blood Money...)
In fact it's not really neutral, the cover system is made in a bad way because they turned the game into a Run-and-gun/cover-to-cover OTS (Over-The-Shoulder) game.
