They actually did Sonic some justice in this game. It doesn’t suck like most of the more recent games (looking at you Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric, Black Knight, and Secret Rings >_>), but it doesn’t copy everything from the past Sonic games. It copies a little, with the side scrolling and level theme borrowing. Then they spiced up his classic look and gave him the homing attack which is the best thing they could have done for the 2D Sonic series. Although the game is great, it does have its flaws. One of these flaws is very tight controls. Sonic games usually do have tighter controls of most games but thats because of the speed aspect. But no. in this game you stop on a DIME. This is super annoying and makes you overshoot or undershoot your position. Also the jumping is hit or miss. You move to the exact location of where you moved and stop. It can be good for tricky platforming but other times you just won’t move. Don’t know if this is a legit problem or if it’s because I’m playing with a keyboard on PC but whatever. The level design is amazing. They are fast paced fun and have enough difficulty to make them challenging. The four main areas are Splash Hill, Casino Night, Labyrinth, and Scrap Brain (not actual names except Splash Hill). The bosses are even better. They put a spin on the classic Sonic bosses that the zones were based off of. The controls are a little weird but again, I’m using a keyboard. The last thing besides the story that I am going to talk about is the music and it is definitely is Sonic quality music. It sets the scene and provides an upbeat fast paced tone that matches the level so well. Some of my favorite tracks are from the new Casino Night Zone and the new Labyrinth Zone. The last thing left is the story. This is literally “Oh no! Eggman stole the animals! Time to go save them and keep Eggman from destroying the world.” A modern touch on a classic formula that is sure to please any Sonic fan. I can't wait to buy the second episode.
Overall I give this game a 7.5/10
