UHH, this is not Ridge Racer. Not even close. But it is a really good time.
Basically you have a standard arcade racer with ridiculous speed, tough AI opponents, who use drifting, hidden short cuts, ramming or fragging other racers (Wrecking the opponent), or blowing up certain items on the track such as a gas station or 18 wheeler to slow down the other racers. All of this comes into play to win the race. And it is a tough race because you never leave the other racers behind no matter how good your skill is. Dumb catch up logic prevents it. And hurts the game in the process. It doesn't take away from the fun but it prevents it from being what it could of been,
First the controls- Might take a while to get used to, especially if you are expecting Ridge Racer type controls. The power sliding is really different and tight. It takes a while to get used to. Prepare to slame into some walls.
Game modes- Standard racing and last man standing. There is a track builder that is executed really well but I think the online is shut down. It is a shame because the course builder could extend the games life significantly. There are a few more modes like drift attack (ha ha ha).
Looks and sounds- Sounds like Ridge Racer. Even some of the old tumes from previous games makes an appearence. The game looks good. Damn good. The city tracks are really brought to life by gorgeous sky boxes, great lighting (even if a lot of it is baked), nice reflections and blazingly fast speed. I mean really fast! All at a smooth 60 fps. It is really a fantastic looking racer. You always race at night, dusk, or dawn so you always get some great bloom and mens flare. And those industrial settings with the sky boxes makes for some really wow factor moments. The cars (All strait from previous games) look decent enough but the light trails that follws your tail lights or the strek of light after you hit your turbo is a great touch.
By the way this game is tough. Part of the reason is dumb AI catch up crap that haunts arcade racers but the other part is the crazy speed mixed in with the wonky drift mechanic. It takes a while and you might wanna quit and come back to it a few times. It can get frustrating and I felt I never really learned how to drift.
But it just isn't Ridge Racer. And something tells me the game was hurt by the title. Some folks purchased it expecting something else and others did not wanna give it a chance because of the title. Do you like arcade racers? Then buy this game. It is the most under-rated and under-appreciated racer on Stean right now.
