Edit: Not that I think X3 is dodgy, and I guess if they explicitly allow USB's and eSata then I might be overcautious, but I'd check with them first if you haven't that that's OK.
The way I see it is I paid for the game and I'm the only one playing it. If I was allowed to install software on my work computer I could install steam and play the game. I don't see how this is different.
you don't see how the people you work for may get mad at you for circumventing their policy by using outside hardware to play games using their computers while at work? really??
No. I work by myself with no one around.
the people who pay you want you to work and not play games.
He has a point zanosg....
You might like to check the small print on your Employment Contract. Your work computer may have auditing software already installed that would eventually let your employer know about you running external apps, or even running a game! Even if not mentioned in your Contract an Employer can still monitor their machines usage and may do so legally as part of their in-house security protocol.
Auditiing software can either store logs locally or send it to your employers security team. It would almost certainly reveal how long your were playing.
You might lose your job and get a black mark on any Reference you might hope from them.
Even if you can take your own machine in, if you use Steam through their WiFi it would show up in a log.
If I were you I'd kill this thread and stop playing at work. But it's your life, do as you please.
I guess it depends on the intent of their policy. It might be for security reasons; any external software you run on their computer can expose the company to a lot of problems.
If you're allowed to play games in your spare time, they probably wouldn't mind you using an offline laptop.
Edit: Almost definitely -> might be
Just bring a laptop or tablet to work. A lot less likely that anyone will be upset. But they may still whine about you using their power, which is often silly to get upset about. In that case, bring your own portable A/C battery.
I'd normally complain that you're being paid to work, not play, but I've also seen plenty of jobs where my work load is so light that I may as well bring something along with me. Either because I have absolute dead-time where I have no work and my employer won't address my lacking work load, or in cases where my work load is very slow to process and I easily can multi-task in-between when I need to be actively working and when I am waiting for something to be done. Especially when you consider X3 can be extremely hands-off and automated while you work.
