Pleasantly Surprised
I tried this game out of curiosity, and so far I'm blown away by how much game there is. I knew EQ was an older series, but starting this game is like walking into a forgotten kingdom. I love the variety of classes(necromancer ftw). And even though I just started I can tell there is a ton of other stuff I haven't even scraped the surface of just looking at the help menu. This also kind of has a NWN feel to it, which i dig.

Anyone got any tips for a new guy? Doesn't need to be anything I can look up on the help menu. Stuff like If I should get a jump of foresting(or is it useless?). The kind of stuff experienced players would know. I can see myself playing this a long time.

I'm a weird player, and fairly new back to the game after a 6-year hiatus but, off the top of my head:

  • Harvesting
    I tend to always keep my harvesting up to date -- some quests will require harvesting skills and it's a real drag to go back and pick them up later. Each level, you gain an additional few points of potential harvesting, so I usually spend some time after each level getting those points before moving on.

  • Combat XP
    You can turn Combat XP off by right-clicking your XP bar (and turn it back on when you like). Most people don't find this useful, but sometimes I feel like I'm levelling too fast to really enjoy the content, so I'll turn off combat XP while I get through half a dozen quests or so to see them really "in level". You still gain AA XP and tradeskill XP like this. (And remember, only mobs that are at least green to you will potentially drop chests when they die, so sometimes it's worth it to turn off combat XP if you want to farm for some equipment.)

  • Beginning Tradeskill Quests
    At minimum it's worth doing them and making yourself a set of backpacks (though there may be some new-fangled easier way of getting better backpacks, who knows?).

  • Dressing Room
    You can control-click equipment to enter the "Dressing Room" and see what it looks like on you before you put it on and attune it. That can be nice if you're trying to decide between two and you want to sell or trade the one you don't want.

I'm sure others will have some interesting tips, too.

@cruinne

Thanks for the tips man. Especially the XP one. I could definitely see that coming in handy.

veteran tip for the newbie, if you leave the golden path areas there is no quest help which can be fun if you feel like exploring the old content to its fullest places like zek orcish wastes and enchanted lands and nek forest so many memories....

Actually Zek has quest markers, there's also a setting in the UI that will mark any quest out, especially the old ones.
