If you're completely new, is it worth it?
How is the general population of this game? I've always wanted to play this but I feel with the game being so old and possibly declining in population it might not be worth it to start as a new player. This true?

I played this game a lot, about 5 years back, and the community was still mostly active. But i logged in about a year ago to see if anyone still actually played. And it was a ghost town. As a new player it may be worth it becasue you can expierence a lot of the aolo content. But if you get to a point you need a group, or want to dungeon. You will find that nobody is really around. Also when i played i had access to all of the classes becasue i was a suscriber. I noticed that how ever nice FTP is, there is a lot of race/class restrictions if you dont suscribe to the game. To me that was a turnoff. I dont know what has changed in the last year, but i would expect not much.

Played at original release to 19. Came back for the new servers, games alive, plenty of people always online. If you want a old school mmo experience with a lot of content nad future content then you could enjoy it.

I don't know if you tried this game or not. I started playing it today. So far, I'm unimpressed, and I'll tell you why. If you don't buy a membership ($15 USD) you get a popup on your game screen every so often more or less bugging you to get one. Kind of like when you play a game on your phone that has ads.

Secondly, I at first LOVED the idea of being able to try all the different crafting systems at once, unlike World of Warcraft where you get two and that's it. After I had gathered up a bit of resources I headed to the crafting area to check out what I could do, figuring I could make something from at least one of the areas. I wasn't able to to anything, everything called for 3-4 different items. I'm all for making things complex but, for me at least, I'd have thought it would have been 1-2 items and gradually get more complicated. As I haven't played long, I don't know if it does or doesn't.

Thirdly, I found out you could have a home in the game, and again, I LOVE that idea. A space within a game to make all your own! However, first you need to buy a deed which costs real world money. Then it seems like everything else you could get to decorate it, also comes from the cash shop. I get they are doing this to make money but I feel like since there are all these tradeskills you can work in, why does it seem like everything to decorate said home is coming from the cash shop.

Fourthly, the combat... I was level 6, fighting level 3 spiders and it was taking me just as long to kill them as it was to kill something my same level. Something isn't right there. I should have been wasting those bugs.

.
There are plenty of big houses in the game that you dont need cash shop deeds for, there is alot of decoration content through out many of the games quests as well, for example most heritage quest weapons can be put on the wall for display.

i still play the game a good bit, there is a massive amount of solo content and lore if thats your thing. the housing in my opinion is the best around and there a quite a few big houses you can get. you can also take the carpenter crafting skill to make a massive amount of house items and its a very profitable source of income at endgame. as for the classes, you would have to check the forums, the best classes fluctuate a bit and there are classes so bad that people wont even group with you if you are using them. the game has alot of cool mounts but all recent mounts are pretty aweful looking, massive oversized mounts that block 60% of your screen. overall eq2 is a good game but it does have that learning curve that most mmos have.

Played this actively from the launch to around 2014, been logging in every couple of months to see if it's got better but everything's just getting worse. I regret wasting years on this game, and considering how few players there are around, it seems that it'll die off before EQ1 does. My guild used to have hundreds of players, now nobody else has logged in for years.

The race selection is excellent. Guild halls and player housing are great. But other MMOs do just about everything else better. And decorating might not be of much interest either, once you realize that nobody else is likely to ever see it.

Definitely wouldn't recommend this for anyone who's interested in soloing, exploration, or lore. Everything is built on solo -> group -> raid progression, and most of the 'heroic' content (especially past level 70) is in raids. Solo quests are basically just you running courier missions and doing other menial jobs.

Might be worth a look if you're a hardcore raider, but you have a lot of catching up to do if you want a spot in any worthwhile raid.

Oh, and before I forget: exp rate has been heavily cut at lower levels. They encourage you to buy max-level tokens from the cash shop instead.

If you haven't played it yet, give Guild Wars 2 a try. It can be played free, without any kind of nags or popups, and sounds like the crafting is more of your style. Single character can master all crafting professions. You can only have two active at once, but can switch between them for a minor fee (in-game currency, not cash shop). Maximum of four items per recipe, andt you can just toss the materials into a free account-wide material storage. No need to worry about inventory space, etc.

True, best-looking furniture now ends up in the cash shop. Same goes for basically everything else, such as appearance gear and mounts. Free drops are clearly designed to look plain, to incite players into buying something better. Been like that for a few expansions now.
