combat orientated? or are there also different skills to train?
i was looking for a good, oldschool rpg when i stumbled across geneforge. it looks really cool and i'm certainly willing to purchase it, but the point is that i'm a bit done with combat orientated rpg's. so i wondered if there were more skills to train here, or at least have a lot of things to do besides the main story. ( not just side-quests what i'm looking for )

if anyone could give me some insight on this, that would be much appreciated ;)

These games are pretty combat focused (in a turn-based kind of way), but there are skills like leadership (which affects NPC interactions) & mechanics (for trap disarming & lock picking).

For the most part, the only activities in these games are quests (both main & side). Later in the series, some crafting is introduced (but nothing to get excited about).

Go to http://www.spiderwebsoftware.com/products.html and click on the games that interest you for demos. They are large enough to get a very fair assessment of play style.

Geneforge is a bit better than most of the other games Spiderweb produces in providing multiple ways to complete the game. While at least a little combat is unavoidable, a very large chunk of the game can be completed simply by having high Leadership and Mechanics, since most destinations have two routes to get to them: a trap-laden one and a monster-laded one. If you go that route, most of the game will be talking your way through situations and disarming traps.

So, depends on what you're looking for, really.

What CRPG's meet your criteria? I've never played a CRPG that wasn't heavily combat oriented. There may be some "choose you own adventure" type options between the melee & puzzles, but that's about it.
