Embermage: Act 2 I'm very squishy (Veteran)
Embermages can you offer any tips for Act 2? I plowed through the first part, inlcuding Artificer with no problems other than needing to kite a bit. But with slow spells and lots of mobs, I can't seem to stay healthy, even with 20% health from Formal Regent. I even just got my armor up 100 points and it doesn't seem to help. In the sewer part, first death and then 4 more at level 29. Other guys can almost one shot me, like those rushing lizard guys and even with 170 in poison armor, I take a huge amount from dumb arrow guys. Big pillar guy unique took me probably 5 minutes to beat last night. If I get cornered, I can do much but die or try blasting ice balls and hope. Here is my build:
Embermage 12/17/4[]
Armor is 240, health 1900 wand dps 340, staff dps 300 max
All element armor over 100 except ice which is low.
I can't get Death's Bounty or Firestorm yet, I'm level 30 now I think.
My normal tactic is using Hailstrom for debuff, hit will icy blast, lay down Infernal bomb thing (I just got this) but it's getting very hectic with skill buttons. Ok so any help appreciated.

first, I see your Dexterity is more than Vitality (without bonuses I suppose). that's useless in a mage since you'll never get as much dodge as Outlanders or Zerks, and spells can do good damage without needing to crit. that's why you have only 1900 HP and 240 physical armor. quite low for level 33.
leave Dex to iteam bonuses, and pump up Vit as a secondary stat after Focus, and primary stat for the next few levelups. especially if you are using a shield - which I highly recommend doing in low level Veteran.

in skills, I personally think you spread too thin, and went for everything instead of focusing on a specific elemental tree and passives.
first you need to decide which element you want to go with, and right now I see it's more Ice, so remove points from Infernal Collapse, Magma Mace, Firebombs and especially Thunder Locus lvl2 - which is almost useless against lvl 30+ mobs, and is in a tree you clearly gave up on.
you can keep Blazing Pillar just because it's awesome, and the points you already have in Fire passives will do only good in the long run.
now, put those points into Frost Wave and Elemental Boon. pump up Ice Brand and Frozen Fate, and put a point or two in Elemental Attunment.

you'll still die a lot because Embarmage is the most squishy char - especially on Veteran or Elite - but you'll be able to make progress on damage alone, taking stuff out before they can get to you, and Frost Phasing away when they do.

Get deaths bounty it is an awesome spell that you can spam and will pretty much keep you at full health and mana. Later on it acts as a snare and a stun while also increasing casting speed an invaluable skill imho.

haha sorry missed the part where you said you couldn't get deaths bounty. deaths bounty is level 28 so if you are 30 you should be able to get it

I will check if I have it now I just hit level 33. Made it through some of Salt Barrens now, not died but aggro'd a unique lizard while fighting the big rock guy in the stack area. Those bats were going to kill me but didn't but took a while. I just don't think I have much chance in the light arena but we'll see. I did download the respec mod so I will go ice if it will help just frost wave didn't seem to do much so went back to fire. My points I listed were with gear, I added a bit of dex to use some wand and now I can't take off my gear or I lost the unique want. But yes, back to vitality next time, I may have some points left.

Well, for myself personally, I put three points into Focus every level, one in Vitality, and one in Dextarity. For skills, max out Charge Mastery, Prismatic Bolt, and Elemental Attunement. I walk through bosses, health isn't even an issue because everything dies before I see it. From level one, just build up and bounce between Prismatic Bolt and Charge Mastery. I've made four different builds with the Embermage thus far, and Prismatic Bolt with Elemental Attunement is the way to go. Socket your gear with mana regen gems and +mana gems. I've found that staves have a longer list of beneficial stats to add to your character, so I stick with them as much as possible. Also, I've noticed that if your weapon has a damage over time (i.e. 1200 Fire damage over 4 secs.) it seems to re-proc the elemental effects on the target at the same rate your Prismatic Bolt does (like a 20% chance to Burn/Poison/Freeze/Shock) without reapplication of said Prismatic Bolt; I first noticed this trend on my Outlander, so I am of the mind that it is NOT my Elemental Attunement causing the effects to randomly proc.

Hope this helps.

I'm still squishy.

Get berserker/eng to play with. It works.

NG++ is supposed to ♥♥♥♥ you, unless you play Casual.
my Berserker-prime needed lots of life steal + attack speed + armor reduction + one Legendary claw, just to survive longer than 5 minutes each time.
Engineer is easier, but you need to have the right skills maxed - namely Forcefield and Healing Bot - and LOTS of armor and HP.

my Embermage-prime got to NG+++ in Elite, but I think I broke the number-of-deaths record in the process :)

Ok failed big time in Phase arena, Survive. I don't know how that would work, it was one big Turian salalmander and his minions. I could barely cast a spell before he rushed me and took 80% of my health. Tried 3 times and just ran away. I could respec with Prismatic bolt I guess but I guess I don't see why it's any better than these other pew-pew spells. At least freeze balls stop them sometimes from rushing me and really has helped a lot for that. Oh I did find an armor spell 12% and got vitality to 65 and armor is now 270....but I have 2 gear pieces gving me like +85 so i don't know where people find better, the shop only has 50 max on chest armor now. And I borrowed Soulshield armor from another character no idea what I'd do if I just used what was dropped.

Frost Phase, and Death's Bounty will be your best friend. Frost Phase will get you out of tight spots fast and do alittle damage as well. Death's bounty will save you from buying potions and going broke, if planted on a group correctly and wipe them out, your health will replen fully.

Maybe I've been using Frost Phase wrong but I hardly use it. Can I teleport over these blades in the light arena? Too many skills to keep track of, can't get through the stupid Arena of Light after 4 tries. There is no room to anticipate when to cast spells and the poison arrow guys are just cheapness. I even have pet with imp and skeles now. Getting through the first part barely and then that longggg rotating slicer row is also cheap. But really it's killing me when I run in the middle so it's cheating...grrrr...If anyone needed a damage bubble spell, it's mage, why in the world does engi get it?
SirSmack'ems Nov 11, 2012 @ 3:06pm
you can teleport in the arena, you just gotta becareful where you land.
peetski Nov 11, 2012 @ 3:54pm
Well I get over the blades by teleporting and then getting to the skele with the green swords and get torn to pieces by those punks with the hooks and purple spears. It would just be luck if I made it this far again, nearly died plenty. Now deaths up to 9, I guess that's what I get for thinking he was boring in act 1. It's like I need to 1-shot everything here just to get by and that isn't happening. I guess I'll give up now, 110 hours with 4 characters and I haven't even gone to the end yet. I think I'll finish my engi normal mode might be a relief.

Invest in the Flame Pillar Spell. It's great for takign down a boss because of the high DPS. Also use Arc Beam. It's good for taking enemies down when your cornered. Flame pillar is alos handy in the arena because it can go out and target enemies. Try using shotguns too your dexterity doesnt determine how well it is used like before, you can you use it for enemies that are in groups when you are low on mana.
SirSmack'ems Nov 11, 2012 @ 9:55pm
Yes! Flame Pillar is an extremely good asset to your arsenal, as well as thunder locus. If you drop both those attacks, you'll do so much damage.

Im currently on NG+ with my embermage using this guys build I was a little squishy in the early levels but it really shines once you get higher. I put 3 into focus, 1 vit , and 1 dex in the early levels once I got to 53 dex I just statered putting the extra point into vit.
