Torchlight Essentials is great, nothing too horribly game changing.

Honestly, I feel that Synergies is fine for a first playthrough.

I suggest that you play a little vanilla (maybe until you get to around the end of Act 1). This should introduce you to the mechanics nicely and allow you to appreciate the differences between Vanilla and Synergies.

If you do play Synergies, I would also suggest you play as Salan's Necromancer (included). It is balanced very well for Syn and is much more entertaining in my opinion than the base classes.

Also, shameless self-plug here - I have a classmod up named "The Noxmer Class"(can be found in the Workshop). It is mostly balanced for Synergies in Veteran difficulty but might make things that bit too easy in the early game.

Play Vanilla first so that you can see how the game is without any mods. Then after you beat the game if you do not want to get your character to lvl 100 and do a few NG + plays use mods.I never see a point to going straight to using mods for a game one has never played unless the game itself was a buggy nightmare and the mods are unofficial patches.

I would back Ser Williamson advice. play around in Act I to learn the game and try some Mods.
Then GO FOR IT. Durring your first time though you learn 'things'. Do it with a character set up that you like. [[Also you might want to concider how much you have played other games of this type]]

im playing throu the game for the first time right now, and im using synergi, and i LOVE IT, it so soooo nice, and hard (on elite and synergi (onely core mod))

I'd play vanilla for a while before moving to Synergies, otherwise you won't know whether Synergies is an improvement or not. It's a great mod, but be irritating sometimes. But you don't have to play through the whole game to get the flavor of the vanilla game (so to speak).

Vanilla have a lot of game rooms compared to mods. Playing with mod I can barely find someone to play with. I suggest you play first on vanilla.

Remember that when you use a mod on a certain character that character will be bound meaning if you remove the mod that you have previously used, you won't be able to play that character anymore. But there are some steps to overcome this.

Vanilla is better because you play / feel the Original Game.

Even for old schoolerz like me I would say play 'ice ice baby'

StealthMomo has a good point: if you're planning to play online you're probably going to be stuck with vanilla, so you'd better learn to be good at playing it. I am almost exclusively single-player except for the occasional LAN game so it's never an issue fo me.

And it is fun interacting with different people. I help them level on some games and I show my prowess on other occasion.

Definetly Vanilla First

Start with vanilla unless you're sure you don't want to coop with strangers. One of the nice things about TL2 is you can leave your game open and people will actually join, people who aren't crackheads and don't want to show off their gear or talk consntantly, but simply roam around with and play the game. This won't happen as often with Synergies simply because there aren't as many people playing.

If you prefer to play alone or you've got a crew you always bring along, it can't hurt. TL2 isn't some masterpiece you can spoil by doing it wrong. You're never going to get an adrenaline rush from this game or pull our your hair deciding how to gem your weapon. It's an okay hack & slash like Fate or Titan Quest. Try not to overthink it.
