i personally prefer the torchlight series over the diablo series because it seems a lot more comically and fun. yes its the same style of game as a diablo but overall i enjoy it more and i was hesitant to play torchlight 2 because i was tired of so called "diablo" clones. (look what happened now i have 2 characters that are both around level 50 and have played for 27 hours in a matter of a few days)
torchlight plays more like the game fate to me(little wonder the co producer of fate works for runic studios) then a diablo and i loved fate and the fishing and pets ect... and with torchlight 2 you can use your pet to buy consumables on top of selling your unwanted gear so there is almost no reason to ever go back to town besides storage and quest turn ins so it keeps the game fast paced and enjoyable.
however if you werent a fan of the original torchlight i wouldn't expect much change (granted i didnt play the original so i don't know) other then the co-op is super fun if you have a friend to play with.
Well, the thing I loved about Diablo 2 was the fact that it wasn't comical. It was dark and creepy, and oh god I loved it so much. But it was so repetitive and boring. Diablo 3 was just absolute garbage to me.
With regards to Torchlight, I liked it, I guess, but it used the same system as Diablo 1 (one town, dungeon with multiple levels, etc.). Torchlight 2 has more than one town and dungeons, but Iunno if I can really enjoy the comical-ness of it. :s
Some have mentioned Path of Exile is a decent alternative, but I haven't looked into it.
it's a no-brainer comparing Torchlight 2 to Diablo 3, but then D3 isn't Diablo series.
it's overpriced-crap series. a game that assumes you are both very stupid AND willing to throw your money around for no logical reason.
but TL2 vs D2, or TL1 vs D1?
I think the best answer is that TL1 is a spiritual successor to D1 (which also adds some elements from Titan Quest), but TL2 is NOT the spiritual successor of D2. Path Of Exile is. it's got a similar dark atmosphere and even similar voice-acting.
TL2 is an evolution of D2: making combat faster, loot bigger and easier to manage and trade, and content more addictive, varied, re-playable and moddable. but it sacrifices story and atmosphere to do all this - which some die-hard D2 fans may not like.
although I'm a die-hard D2 fan, and I personally have no problem with that :)
It really doesn't. I've been playing since release and am farming Inferno no probs with just what has dropped in game, no money spent.
I may give TL2 a chance and hope it proves to be more than just a repetitive, 3D remake of Torchlight 1 and/or Diablo franchise.
Playing TL2 right now. Some things I don't like about it, but for the most part, it's fun. Or at least, much more than Diablo II and Diablo III.
