Send out hapless rookies to shoot aliens. Watch the rookies miss and get cut down in a hail of plasma fire. Send out more hapless rookies to throw grenades at aliens, grenades don't miss. Kill the aliens, take their stuff, reverse-engineer it, build plasma weapons for your rookies and promote the rookies to snipers who can shoot across half the map or rocketeers who unleash massive destruction. Now with psionic powers and nanomachines!
The game is very very streamlined compared to the original X-COM:UFO, sometimes a bit too much. "Reload" is a simple action, no more inventory micromanagement of ammo clips, which is good. But when your medic is critically wounded and bleeding out, it gets annoying to realize that the "use medkit" function doesn't actually involve a medkit item that can be picked up, it involves a special ability of the unconscious medic that nobody else can duplicate.
Overall, a few nits like that and the weird sidestep mechanics when firing from cover are not enough to ruin a nice game of small squad tactics. Make sure to check out the Long War mod for more of everything, too (and experience your troops being cut down in a hail of plasma fire again after Long War turns the difficulty up).
