XCOM integrates a lot of interesting features and systems into its gameplay. I was looking forward to playing it for its tactical turn-based combat system, but found myself having more fun with the base management, research and engineering system. However, it does not come without any faults, I encountered numerous bugs, ranging from the non-saving options menu (that I have to re-configure each time I play) to sluggish in-game user interface. The meat of the game, tactical turn-based missions, was a decent experience. The overwatch mechanic, in my honest opinion, takes away from strategic thinking and instead enables slower play and turtling without much tactical considerations or drawback. I can't imagine how badly it ruins multiplayer. All in all, the singleplayer campaign was a fun time, you will have to enjoy the gameplay because there isn't much of a story.
Sidenote: I do criticize Firaxis for releasing XCOM: Enemy Within as a standalone game on consoles, but on PC you have to buy the $32 base game XCOM: Enemy Unknown before you can play the $32 Enemy Within, which is just the same campaign as XCOM:EU with some extra missions and updates. I would recommend XCOM: EU, but buy Enemy Within only if you like the base game and if it goes on sale.
