XCOM: Enemy Unknown
Arc Thowers !
Just my 2 cents.

Get the ar thrower fast and use them every opportunity. The gathering of plasma weapons early from stunned aliens is very valuable. Helps get yer team equipped without the added cost of making the weapons as well.

As far as I know, a stunned enemy won't get the exp of a kill (as the alien is still alive, obviously). And you still have to at least research them. Plus, you need to get them to at least 3 health or less without the Improved Arc Thrower.
So, using it all the time is a bad idea. Using it when it's easy? Yeah, do it.
Exactly, better clarification Bindal !! Thanks.

I have been able in a couple play throughs, to skip lasers and go straight to light plasma due to the amount of weapons collected. Sure the research time is long when you get it so early, but really pays off. I have even had to research lasers only to fufill requests from the council, lol hehe.

How is that obvious?
The whole idea that you have to kill to get "EXPERIENCE POINTS!!!!" is a purely arbitrary game mechanic that's a left-over from RPGs from 20 years ago.
There's absolutely no good reason for your squad member to be denied potential promotions from doing a task that, in terms of both the game's story and mechanics, is more useful to the XCOM project and more risky to the squad member themselves.

Anyone in their right mind would say that earns them more experience, not less.
I totally agree, capturing should net good exp. It is a much harder strat to deliberately go for captures due to need to get close, not get the kill shot and hunker down instead of overwatch many times due to the fact overwatch may kill your prey. Its a very fun directive, though, very challenging to go for captures over kills. It also helps pratice good positioning and movement :)

You could just go "get experience for properly using their weapons". It's a simple mechanic, but it works.
Also, you already get quite a few sweets for capturing aliens alive. Plasma weapons and the ability to interrogate them (which in return lead to more research items or other kind of rewards).

That doesn't address what I said at all.
I have to tendency to capture alien whenever i get the chance to despite having all the research. Mainly due to Ethereal usually is the last guy you need to hunt, some alien like to come next to you like floaters. You know how it is.. you hit a floater till it has 4 hp bar, then it flies and try to flank your sniper. Then your sniper goes.. hey loo at what i got right here*pulls out a arc thrower*.

Actually, I'm not sure of that. There's no real way to know if a captured alien grants xp or not, since you have no xp-meter on your soldiers and the xp is kept hidden (which is good)

And you still have to at least research them. Plus, you need to get them to at least 3 health or less without the Improved Arc Thrower.

You indeed can use it against enemies with more than 3 HPs but it's less efficient. ratio seems to drop 15% or so for each HP of the mob, and 20% for every square between you and your target (with a max of 2 squares distance). (the numbers are approximative, I should check them next time I play).

I have captured mobs with more than 3 HPs and odds under 50% in the past.
I did capture an alien with a 26% chance..not sure if it was 5 or 6 hp ?
Aside from the lack of experience, there are a few other things you miss out on by live capturing. At the start of the game this means slightly less cash from selling corpses and less weapon fragments (which I find to be a bottleneck for research), later on you need the corpses to make stuff like mind shields etc. Obviously the risk of a live capture is much higher, and by lugging around the arc thrower you lose the slot to carry another decent piece of gear like a scope or chitin plating.

Don't get me wrong, capturing is real important - you need those freebie weapons and live aliens for interrogation, and it's a lot of fun too. But a lot of the time there's nothing to gain by capturing and you are better off with the corpse + weapon fragments + experience instead of a plasma gun you don't need. Occasionally some country will offer to buy your spare plasma weapons and offer good cash for them, it's nice when that happens. Someone gave me $1600 in my last game for 4x plasma rifles (to be fair those are actually pretty hard to come by, but the cash was well needed at the time).

Once I have enough guns, I'll usually kit out a support with an arc thrower + the run faster promotion + ghost or skeleton armour. Lets them run a lot faster and get in close without having to be too risky about it.
