Silent Storm
Age of Wonders
There's also a free reboot of the original XCom called UFO: Extraterrestrials.
Jagged alliance (as cougarific said)... JA back in action has many flaws.. but I like it.. it will come around on a steam sale at some point in the next few months.. grab it for 5bucks lol. Its basically xcom set in a banana republic.
Id also suggest UFO afterlight, and aftershock Gold. Both on steam. Afterlight manages to be quite "oldskool" and modern at the same time.
There are others, but running them on a modern pc makes your screen look like a graphics card crash. The pixels are so big you will worry your MB is melting.
Afterlight is particularly good because it deviates from strict turn based control.. you basically have a time slider... so you can still do all the old plan-and-move stuff... but without the rigors of the unrealistic turn based system
Very similar in terms of gameplay and tactics, but with a different setting (colorful mercenaries in 3rd world environments) is the Jagged Alliance franchise. Jagged Alliance 2 was the best IMHO, and inspired a ton of mods. There's a remake (JA: Back in Action) out now on Steam, which is decent but it doesn't quite live up to expectations.
The X-Com series inspired a bunch of 3rd party remakes/ripoffs, the closest to the original was UFO: Extraterrestrials or something like that.
One remake/ripoff that became a series in its own right is the UFO trilogy by Cenega (not related to the above). Those were UFO: Aftermath, UFO: Aftershock, and UFO: Afterlight. Those were quite fun (especially Aftershock and Afterlight) but extremely buggy. Afterlight is on Steam, not sure about the others.
Promising...got a ways to go yet tho it seems.
*edit*
Xenonauts looks really cool! Going to do more research on the game and I may pre-order it
Have them for my PsP :) They are amazing time killers when traveling
JA2 was good; get the 1.13 unofficial patch for it.
Sorry, bit of a typo there. Might & Magic Heros 4. Fantastic game btw
In fact I just replayed JA2 after JA: Back In Action turned out to be a disappointment - it's better than good (with 1.13).
I re-installed it from my original CD-ROM (!!!!) after reading mixed reviews about JA:BiA.
thanks for the clarification dude
What he really meant was JA2 (not JA: Back In Action) gets even better with unofficial mod patch v1.13. And he is right, I still play that game up to this day. No other tactical combat game has ever come close to it in terms of gameplay options and depth, really.
