Xcom Crashes
Finally got to play the game after waiting for the US to beta test it for me ;p but they didnt do a good job. Many crashes back to desktop. Some crashes say the .exe has crashed and other times it just goes back to desktop without any warning. Playing the Tutorial on Classic and Ironman and have got to round/mission 6 by percervering but the last mission( downed medium UFO) has finally crashed too many times for me to carry on with it. This was the first game I pre-ordered as I usually wait to see what the rest of the community thinks first. Guess I only have myself to blame...no wait, I blame the US players for not doing their beta testing properly.
Seriuosly though, the 1.8gb patch hasnt fixed things by all acounts.

Sounds like something could be wrong with your rig. I've not experienced any of this crap and have played for several hours without the game crashing or having an .exe error message/cutting to desktop. I have had problems with the game not wanting to save at some points but just continued for it to save during a mission. Check your system for malware, viruses, or if it even meets the requirements to play the game?
You might also want to verify the files with steam. There was that update but something could be wrong with the files. This happens programs are not perfect and neither are people or computers.
I also don’t see any reason you are blaming this on people in the US just because they got to play the game a day or two before some countries. There were several people posting screen shots and crap like that for this game before it was released for play in US. I didn’t beta test the game I did play the demo and it worked fine. People like to have custom built rigs leading to more ram, better gpu/cpu, etc, etc. This alone is why they set spec requirements for games.
Anyways I just felt like adding this to your topic because I don’t see thousands of people having the same issues as you. When you do get an error message about the .exe crashing or what not does it give any type of code or explanation of why it crashed? ie: not enough physical memory etc?

The bit about the US beta testing was just a bit of sarcasim about having to wait to play the game when I was seeing the fun the US was having, hence the ' ;p ' . As it being my rig, this is the only game it seems to happen on and I meet the requirements to play the game(I'd feel dumb if that wasnt the case, eh) I had crashes on other games before but they were fixed with patches. I am not the only one who has had crashes since the latest patch, not sure about before the patch as I only read so far on the discussion forums. The crash just tells me xcom app has finished unexpectedly and then a small steam window pops up saying the application is not available at the moment but a second later I can run the game again. Maybe you are right and I need to check in to verifying the files, so thanks for that suggestion. Playing on 'Ironman' doesnt give me the option to save while in missions, only if I want to save and exit, so not experienced that problem. I also played the demo, many times, and never had any problem with it.
Thanks for the suggestions.

Thank god I am not alone. I installed XCOM 5 hours ago and I was able to play the tutorial once. I had 15 game crashes up to now and I was able to play for 8 minutes one time. All other times the game crashed before that. It not only crashes on missions. I already tried to alter the display options, audio options, but to no avail.

Um, yeah. I just bought this game for $49.99. It gets past the 3 logos when you start it up and then it crashes at the load screen..What the hell?

Ok. So I verified the files and it found one file missing or corrupt and the next time I played the game it downloaded that file. About an hour in to playing, the game crashed again. I checked the verify again and again 1 file was missing or corrupt and again I tried to play the game and it downloads the file again.
I played the game offline and when it crashed and I tried to play the game again, this time it automaticly tried to download the missing/corrupt file and being offline I could only cancel and go online to download the file so I could at least play the game until the next crash.
I have also noticed that if I leave the game on while away from the computer it will also crash to desktop, and if I Alt-Tab out and do something else it will also crash after a while. Guess I will go play some other game until a patch is released that fixes this.

I've exactly the same symptoms. I was able to play 3 hours on one lucky run, but there's no joy since then.

I've thoroughly examined my system: codecs, drivers, hardware, I've tried to disable multimonitor config, to detach unnecessary hardware and what not. No result.

I get the same crash after the third splash screen on two different rigs

I've had the game crash once (played 5 hrs last night), and one time where the game locks up or hangs at alien activity. Its clear there are still some glaring bugs in the game.

I would however, suggest to try the following:
- Check if steam.exe is run in any kind of compatibility mode (some games need it, others not).
- If you're running win7, you can use the memory diagnostic tool (click on the windows button and the search bar). The next time you boot your computer it will test your memory to see if there are any damaged modules.

One problem I had was that the tactical camera was going to one corner all the time. I think I solved it by unplugging my joystick (but I also disabled the tutorial, so it could have been either).

Of course chances are small that two different rigs have the same problem (do they have the same gfx-card or is one nvidia and the other amd?)

Identical issue here. Most I cam play is about 20 minutes.

I pre-loaded game, played all the way through on easy never had any issues. I never exited the game in the past 4 days or so, just paused and left it on, no issues. Went to start another new game today after I installed the update and after a few missions it locks/frezzes. This has happend 2 times now. I'm thinking they should have beta tested the game and udate a lot more.

having crashing issues while loading the downed ufo mission too.... hmmm... this is so frustrating!!!!
perfectionistuk Oct 13, 2012 @ 12:11pm
Same here. About 12 crashes so far, always mid-mission. Playing on a 6 month old laptop - not most amazing spec, but meets min spec for the game by a fair way. I'm on the verge of asking for a refund.

Assume no on has come across a fix?

Managed to play a full 5 hour stretch without any crash. The randomness of crashes is equal to the randomness of a successful hit at 100% :(
