You can't abort it if things go wrong.

I found about a dozen Chryssalids there. Move slow and bring a couple snipers. There's a lot of open terrain.

you cant abort and the baddies are chew you up mean. save before you make anymoves and then save often on a second file often

I managed to pull it off with just one KIA with carapace armor, and standard weapons (and 2 light plasma rifles). Lots of chryssalids, but also great vantage points for my trusty sniper. The end "boss", for lack of a better term, was a joke.

wow you have 2 plasma rifles at that point already :O..I only have a squad with laser weapons, and complete it with 1 lost but it was a drone so I don't know if you still count that a lost.
unless this thread is about the Assualt on the alien's ship at the end of the game.

the fastest way ive found to get plasma weapons is stun a thinman hella early. the weapons are preserved and you can research them but I think armor is more important then guns earlygame

I wonder if the alien base scales in level with you. When I did it I had a full squad in carapace armor and one in Titan armor, light plasma rifles/plasma rifles and everyone but two died (including both my Col.'s). It was like a never ending wave of Mutoids and Berserkers.

Don't tell me that... I'm about to do the base assault. 2 snipers (plasma), 1 assault (alloy cannon), 2 support (plasma rifle) and a heavy (plasma), My Colonel ranked Sniper and my Colonel ranked Support are in Titan, everyone else is in Carapace. I have 4 Colonels, 1 Captain, and I believe the last one is a Corporal. If it levels with you, I am boned.

Plasma Rifles, Assaults and Carapice or Triton armor ... gg alien base.

The spawns are what you would face in regular missions, so the farther you are, the bigger and badder the enemy. But be warned, once you beat the base and research the transmitter, normal UFO's no longer appear. And since that's where you get the majority of alloy, you better have all the tech you want researched, cause almost everything requires alloy.

My third encounter in the base was a sectopod. It wiped out my entire team in 3 turns. Yeah, the base is hard.

I can one-shot a Sectopod with a rocket-toting Heat Ammo/Mayhem Heavy, and it's guaranteed every time. If you don't have a colonel by this mission, use 2 heavies.

Well, I found something interesting.... once you save in the alien base, all your autosaves in that game up to that point are deleted, and it is not Ironman. So basically, if you save at the beginning of the base, you can return to the beginning of the base, but you can't return to an earlier save in that game. I tried one of my autosaves, but they were from my first game that I abandoned. So be warned, once you commit, you commit. That isn't fair either. I wish it was like the original X-Com. However, I don't think you find multiple bases like you did in the original game. Base raiding was usually the best part, because you got loads of salvage.

A good tactic I found for the alien base is to build up your soldiers and use the base attack mission as a "clear all panic in the world" reward. Depending on how high your panic is now, if it is low, this will give you several months of building up without having to worry about losing countries.
