Does anybody know how to get the Defender's Medal?
I read on the Xcom Wikia that to earn the Defender's Medal you have to have a soldier dying, being critically injured, stabilized or gravely wounded during a mission. All these events have happend to me and the Defender's Medal is still locked, I've earned all the other medals but this. Can anyone tell me what I exactly need to do to earn this medal? Thanks.

Dying on a mission you won? I do not know if you get medals when you lose the mission.

But is there anyway to get the medal without having one of your soldiers die? I've read some posts about the medal and people have earned the medal without anyone dying :(
I'm already at the point in the game where Ethereals will start to show up in UFO crashes.

I had to sacrifice a soldier in a perfect, in all other aspects, playthrough on Classic Ironman to get this stupid medal and complete the achievement with the high decorated volunteer. Finished the game with just one casualty. So, I am not aware of the other ways. I think *after* you have lost a soldier, you can get it through the other ways. Not before.

EDIT: it seems that Starwing6 said that you can have it after stabilizing a soldier. IDK

I got it from having a soldier get close to dying but I didn't lose him. I healed him up with med kits and still got the medal.

(Oh, but maybe because I did have a soldier die before that and unlocked the medal the first time that way...)

Try secondary heart modification and then revive that soldier. I did get defender medals without death - soldiers was gravely wounded, but that is kinda risky.

I got it in my second mission when playing impossible by having a soldier die. (well I did not want him to die but he did)

I actually tried that. It was a Small UFO crash site and I had one of my soldiers with the Secondary Heart Gene Mod get critically wounded by the last alien, after that I just killed the alien and ended the mission with him in the state to be stabilized but I still didn't get the medal.

I suppose it's possible that the medal isn't guaranteed to be awarded.

It is guaranteed. You only need a soldier to die. You will not get the medal, the first time, any other way. After the first soldier, you can get it all the other ways mentioned.

Dangit... I was hoping to finish my first Enemy Within playthrough without any soldiers dying :(

Yes, my feelings exactly. It is not often you can get through classic ironman with *absolutely no casualties*. Now, I hope I will be able to make *that* personal achievement(that, interestingly, is not one of the official Fireaxis achievements) on another playthrough...

You must be very good, I always end up losing a soldier in Ironman Classic.

If you do not play Ironman, though, you can wait until before designating the volunteer. Save. Have a mission with someone killed. Decorate the person. Volunteer him. You got the achievement. Now, reload, and finish the game with no casaulties ;).
