XCOM 2

Discussions how XCOM2 is based on having lost
This thread is for discussions of the fact XCOM2 is apparently based on the premise that the aliens successfully invaded - theories, speculation, implications, etc. Is it retcon, alternate history, or something happened 'after' the end of EU/EW?

Update: we now have a clearer idea of what the official line from the developers is - an alternate version of the invasion where things went more badly and XCOM was shut down early - but people can still post their reactions to that, and what alternate version they would prefer to have seen, or may even be personally pretending the story is.

Well it's a given that we lost. It's the "is it the same or an alternate universe?" that I'm not sure.

But they have super heroes. XCOM is supposed to be this guerilla rebel faction that's not directly fighting the aliens.

Unless I drastically misunderstood that trailer.

Also just a minor gripe:

They really should've fleshed out the fight scene more. The only new things I saw were modeling changes. Other than the little robot they didn't show any new features or mechanics.

Hey, technically it's an alien cargo ship.

In addition, it's not like there's really anywhere else for xcom to go. Underground bases have a way of getting discovered anyway, and you can't just fly one of those away.

After 20 years of using plasma based weapons, XCOM finally invented swords.

So we'll be playing as a terrorist organization?
Milk Jun 1, 2015 @ 8:51am
Well I mean they showed the guy holding the sword. And the Sectoid Hybrid. And then a black screen.

They also showed a dude get strangled by the snake man. I'm not even sure if he died (he should've died, would've made XCOM seem like they're desperate). How did they even kill the snake man?

My theory so far is that the "threat" the Ethereals were worried about came back to earth and overpowered us. That could perhaps also explain the lack of snakemen in EU/EW, with them being part of the bigger threat. Either way so pumped for this.

EDIT: Nevermind, if you check the trailer at 0:43 you can see a picture of an Ethereal behind the unification statue. So maybe it is the same faction after all. Still not sure whether alternate universe or not.

I would guess that the EU/EW is seen as playing out as shown, but that more stuff happened afterwards. This is 20 years later, after all.
