Team Fortress Classic
All GoldSRC games painfully slow
My PC can run BF3 on high settings at about 23 FPS...
This runs on the lowest settings at about 15
Is there some setting for newer PC's that I'm missing? This also happens with the original HL, but not source.

Post your pc specs.
GoldSrc games seem to run better on computers such as mine. Windows XP. Your Computer is just too good for GoldSrc. These games are a lot easier to run with older computers.

royston vasey makes every effort to make sure the server runs fast and smoothly
Alright Burger, I've got a Quad Core i3 (1.22ghz), a GT 335m, 8gb of RAM (shouldn't matter for a game that only needs 512MB max), Windows 7 and I run at 1366x768. It's not the best, but it really should be fine because of the other games that run perfectly fine on it.

Not really, it does what it has to do but that's about it.
Alright guys, I've solved it, good old >100FPS as I should be getting on a GPU like this. In graphics settings, I had to change the renderer from OpenGL to Software. I guess my GPU just doesn't like OpenGL.

good
its wierd because i have a windows 8 laptop and goldsrc run as good as source games aka as smooth as a babys bottom, wierd isnt it?
I can only run this game on software mode, graphics looks terrible, worse than original quake, if I turn it to opengl, the fps drops to 4 or 5 fps on low settings. I have a i7 870 and Ati HD 5850 and I know this is a drivers issue. I have had trouble running other old games like jedi academy with latest ati/amd drivers.

That is exactly what happens with me. So yeah, I guess newer cards are just super-angry at OpenGL.

what graphics mode allowed you to see underwater without it being cloudy? i ways back some servers would kick you if you used that mode.
I don't recall that, I'd check them both. I just got a 650 TI for christmas, and I run both modes at 200+ FPS, so I guess that some of the mid range cards (335m and 5850) aren't good with OpenGL.
There's an option somewhere in the settings that has to do with how the game renders (D3D, OpenGL.) HL1 did the same thing for me until I sitched to D3D I believe

This might be due to the fact OpenGL 1.0 t 2.9 is deprecated which might mean all new hardware might not be able that version of OpenGL
