I like this idea. If Valve sees this, I hope they'll do it. I like this game as much as TF2, but I don't play much because it's borderline dead. We need more people online.

yeah, i like both too, i remember playing the physical version of this game waaay back, this is a smart move for valve as its a new way for players to experience classics

I actually got the game by accident. I got Half-Life GotY edition as a gift, and I entered the disks's product key so that I would have a backup on Steam. However, not only did it give me Half-Life, but it also gave me every commercial mod made on it. (CS, TFC, DoD, Etc,) It was weird, but I'm not complaining. Thanks Grandad and Gaben.

That's not the reason, if it was free more people would play it. The reason is that Valve abandoned this game long ago to focus on it's sequel.

TF2 is already free, and more content in that, so people will skip on this and go play TF2.

The only thing this game has is how different the mechanics are compared to TF2, it's not like you're playing the same game, but simpler.

How about an ad from TF2? You know, where it would pop up news about updates... instead one time have an update that ports more TFC content and have a sort of "See where it all began" at the bottom.
