Far Cry 2 has nothing to do with Far Cry 1 and you can not compare them to each other because of that. Which is great. Because Far Cry 1 was a mess. It wasn't inherently bad of course. Hell, it was cutting-edge at its time! But I didn't like it too much.
Nontheless, Far Cry 2 is just as hard as its predecessor. You're in Africa. You got malaria. Everyone wants to kill you. Ammo is scarce. Weapons jam frequently. Cars do, too. And I'm sure there's one bad person the dev team didn't like for every god damn guard post in this game. Oh the guard posts. Also, the AI is pretty good, especially on higher difficulties, making some fights seemingly impossible to win. Perfect for the masochistic player.
One could argue that the main objective of a video game is to be fun. And you would be right. Seeing all these elements in Far Cry 2 and playing it for myself I can't say the game is always "fun". The game can be a frustrating, challenging and enraging piece of ♥♥♥♥ that slaps you for wanting to play with it. At times, Far Cry 2 doesn't like you nor does it want to play with you. Essentially, this game has a lot of conflict between casual video game fun and stress. But that's what makes this game a good game.
It's not outstandingly great, by any means. But it's pretty solid. Although a lot of the missions come down to "Kill this guy", "Blow up this thing", "Steal that thing" or "Collect 1000 of these, pretty please". Also, you drive around. A LOT. Seriously. If there would be an african driving simulator, this would be it, I can tell you that for a fact.
You could argue that Far Cry 2 can get boring at times. And it does, it certainly does. But then again, I've played MMOs so I'm up for the challenge. I don't get bored that easily. And if you don't get bored that easily like me, Far Cry 2 might just be the right game for you.
You like shooting guys in the face with a variety of weapons? You like burning down vehicles, small, destructible buildings, people and gas stations? You like blowing stuff up? You like a gorgeous looking open world FPS? You don't have anything against repetitive quests and objectives? Having a constant, life-threatening condition that could strike you down at any moment doesn't bother you too much? Driving around in a car that breaks down all the time due to tons of guys shooting at it is no problem for you? If you said "Yes!" numerous times in the last 20 seconds, I advise you to get this game and have fun (or frustration - who cares, both words start with f so that's fair enough) with it!
I like Far Cry 2 so far and if you think like me, you will like it, too. If you don't, it can't be helped. Not everyone can have a decent taste in video games. But you'll learn, I'm sure of it.
