Anybody have an ideas to make a SFM video?
Hello I just recently got an end of the school year video project from my teacher so I was wondering if anybody has some ideas. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated and whoever's idea is chosen I'll mention them in the video. Thanks :)

If we had any ideas we'd be making our own videos. XD

But seriously, not much we can help you with, it's a matter of your interests, what you want to do, or learn. How I build ideas is based around tests. to see if I can do something.

i'll use two videos i've done as examples

The first video I did because I wanted to test out the sfmphys physics script. I knew I wanted to test and i thought of what I do to test it with, the rest of vid built up around that idea.

The second video was I wanted to test a new particle system I got, plus I had this revolver model that didn't have any animatable parts. it was all bodygroups (one normal, one with the cylinder open, with bullets, without, etc), and I wanted to see if I could create a decent looking reload animation just by changing bodygroups. then expanded from there.

it's the same technique Pixar uses when making their shorts. all of pixars animated shorts are just animation tests with a story built around them. Geri's game for example was simply a test for cloth physics.

so you can think like that. think of something you want to try or test and expand on it.

Thank you so much I'm going to definitely mention you when I'm able to get better ideas.

Try this... it was just a test....

what's with the cartoon ponies lol... A little weird and creepy, but at least it's something different i guess.

anyway, i find music gives me a lot of ideas. when i'm listening to something i can't help but let my imagination run wild about action i'd like to see playing to the music.

U can also get an inspiration from cartoons too, U know. Since I'm a big fan of Spongebob (still enjoy it), I make a video by take some part of an episode and enhance with more storyline and humour. Don't believe me? here, take a look

Kind of a tall order to say better than something, especially considering you are talking about a pool of more then 10,000 songs (not an exaggeration) XD

but yeah, music is a great inspiration as well. Listen to the song over and over and try to picture events happening as it plays.

BTW: left a comment on that vid.

problem with copyrighted songs is that you don't know if your will be available on youtube until you upload it... Beware of copyright strikes!!!

sometimes even then. I got a strike once on a vid I had uploaded almost a year before. luckily I was able to talk the artist into removing the strike and just letting me delete it.

Ok since I have an idea does anyone know any guides to help animating? Pretty something that ties SFM into something easy to understand.

There are all kinds of videos out there now, but it is best to start with the basics. Watch the videos put out by the Source Filmmaker team first. The session dmx files are on your harddrive so you can follow this along step by step.

Here's a link to the videos...

Start a 0 and work your way to 13.3

The SFM DMX file for the videos can be found in your

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\SourceFilmmaker\game\tf_movies\elements\sessions\tutorials

Once you get through them, you'll have a pretty good basic knowledge of the program. Then move on to other stuff out there. One site I highly recommend is Jimmer Lins' site. (I wish he'd come back) at

You can pretty much jump around with his stuff, the videos are very informative but in no real particular order.

I have a bit of stuff on my channel at, again in no particular order.
