Revenue question
On the FAQ it says that we're not allowed to make money off of movies we make. I see people doing it all over YouTube though, so is it allowed now or what? I'm confused by this and really want to make Machinima, but if I put a lot of work into one and getting nothing in return then what's the point?

1. Yes, you're not supposed to be making money. But people do it anyway.
2. You should be creating content for fun, not for reward.

Why not both?

If you're using custom models and maps, you can make money. But the assets created by Valve are for non-commercial use. I don't know if that answers your question.

That's silly, even if I use voice acting I can't get anything?

No, you can't make profit from ANY of Valve's assets (Maps, Models, Voice lines etc).

You'd have to make a machinima using nothing of valve's models, maps, voice lines, anything from valve. Good luck making everything.

To be fair, what's the point of valve releasing SFM to everyone if they get no profit for it?

I agree, so many people put work into them they should at least get something. Also weird question, is it possible to get an animation job by doing SFM a lot? (without college experience)?

i thought Valve recently updated their policy to iterate that it's okay for people to collect youtube ad revenue when using their IP's? But the stipulation that the movies created must be free for people to watch (such as on youtube) remains. In other words, you can't make a feature length film with their stuff and go try and get a distribution company to purchase it from you to show in theaters or sell on DVD or w/e. Though if you were to create all your own models and maps, then you could do that (my eventual plan).

it doesn't matter how much work you put into it, it's still an owned IP (intellectual property). Trust me. in my fandom we deal with that **** all the time. there was a group of 40 college kids that spent a year working on a 30 minute fan animation. and they couldn't make a dime off of it.

Now if you were talking about creating an animation in a different style (say flash or whatever) using the tf2 characters, you MIGHT get away with making money under a parody clause. But not using models valve created.

If you could make money off your sfm videos, you'd be last in line, behind Zach Scott or McVee or KrasniyB. I don't really care that I can't make moola off my videos, one cuz they're not as great as the above's and I'd never make any money. Two, because if I could make money off of sfm, valve wouldn't let me or us do it for free. We're talking permission fees and maybe even paying for sfm itself, which I don't want.

"You are free to monetize your videos via the YouTube partner program and similar programs on other video sharing sites. Please don't ask us to write YouTube and tell them its fine with us to post a particular video using Valve content. It's not possible to respond to each such request. Point them to this page.

Of course this policy applies only to Valve content. If you include someone else's content in your video, such as music, you will have to get permission from the owner."

actually i believe that is why Zach Scott started to release his "Wrong Floor" portal series differently. Instead of putting all the different floor episodes into one large youtube film, he now divided them into separate youtube videos (even though he finished most of them around the same time). The reason for this is because now he is gaining many more views and ad revenue across multiple videos instead of just one.

It was a smart move by him, but personally i found it to be a bit greedy and annoying having to watch each episode individually. I would have preferred it was all one film.
