You want SFM for MAC? Use Bootcamp!

Successfully installed Windows 7 on my iMac with Bootcamp. Windows is running off the hardware, no wrappers, parallels, etc... I installed Steam, TF2 and SFM and gave TF2 and SFM a run.

Worked PERFECTLY! SFM screams for me now, no choppiness and no issues.

Just google Bootcamp and check out the many tutorials out there detailing how to install Windows 7 or 8 on a Mac.

Thank you to imagitronics for the suggestion, if it continues to work like this with no issues I have no need to build a better PC.

Glad to hear it worked out. It really never crossed my mind that all the people asking for sfm on a Mac either didn't know about boot camp at all, or had some misconception about how it would work/perform. When you boot windows this way, you are booting your Mac into windows, just like any windows computer from any other manufacturer.

There is no guarantee it will run as advertized. keep in mind, windows is a much bulkier OS then mac. thats why macs can get away with less hardware specs and still perform as well or better. They do more, with less. Trying to run an OS that's practically twice the size on a system optimized for a smaller OS may mean a big drop in performance.

It will run as well as a Dell with the same hardware specs though. I think most people assume it is somehow virtualized and will suffer those penalties. I would actually disagree though. If you have a 5 year old Mac, for example, it will run windows 7 better than Mac OS Mavericks. Most of my old macs become permanent Linux or windows box when a major Mac OS update adds new whiz bang features that make it run like crap.

I've been running SFM since last night and it is performing flawlessly. That being said, my iMac is pretty beefy (i7, 16gb RAM, Radeon6970, etc..) I'm not sure how an older, less powerful Mac would handle it but as imagitronics said it's all relative to the hardware once boot camp comes into play.

hmmm. seems to me that this was one of my original suggestions, way back when the first question about SFM on MAC was entered. People just said it wouldn't work. I guess they just didn't try or had spent so much for their MAC they could afford to buy Windows to install....

Doesn't matter, at least we have some MAC users out there willing to give it a try. Kudos to them.

Honestly. if you are going to do something like this, i don't see the point to buying the OS. it's only for one program.

If I remember rightly, Bootcamp is a dual boot strapper. It's like loading Linux on the Windows machine in a Dual Boot mode.

Correct, I can hold option key down while starting the Mac and it gives me choice to boot into Mac OS or Windows. They run on separate partitions.

[PF2] raptornx01...$62 for a valid copy of Windows 7 for Bootcamp is a helluva lot better than $1000 on a new rig that can handle SFM how I want it to.

I just meant, why would someone buy a full copy of it just to run one program over just DLing it. Doesn't seem worth the price.

Also, I bought my comp a year and a half ago from wal-mart for $500 and it runs sfm just fine. a comp with the same specs would probably be half that now.

Problem here is that you need a registered copy of the Windows operating system. That's not free. I also think Bootcamp is a commercial program as well, I'm not sure.

$62 for a Valid copy of Windows 7 is way better than buying any new equipment. If my Mac has enough power and hard drive space to accommodate Bootcamp it's a no brainer.

Bootcamp comes with any Macs running Intel i7 processors. It's in the disk utility folder from the get go. No cost

Windows 7 was $62.

SFM has been running perfect. Anyone on these forums looking to get SFM to run on their Mac should be doing this. There are no wrappers, ports, etc... to deal with. Simply running Windows off the hardware inside the machine. Mac OS doesn't even come into play.

I just did a search for Mac here and the amount of threads is startling. $60 to $100 for a registered copy of Windows 7 and free Bootcamp is the most reliable (so far :) solution I have come across in the couple months I've been thinking about Mac possibilities with SFM.
