Workshop files don't properly download and crashes when starting SFM
I am not 100% sure if this is a problem with my internet or Steam.

I want to download a few workshop items I would like to use in some of my posters.
(e.g. Maxxy's Enhanced Demoman, the Wheat Pack, some of Sync.'s dark maps. In general: mostly large workshop items >50mb)
However, I cannnot download the items properly, the download says it's "complete" usually when it's halfway through and stops entirely.
I go in SFM and gives me the option to download the workshop items, freezes and then crashes soon after.

I do not get this issue if it's a very small workshop item (<1mb), an update for an item or updates for SFM itself.

Any help is appreciated and I would like to know if anyone else is getting these issues.

Because they are so large, have you tried to subscribe to them individually, (ie sub one, let it complete, then sub the next, so that one is down before subbing anouther. That way SFM is not trying to send more than one set at a time. ) Also check your library download to see if the item has finished.

I have tried subbing to each one individually and the issue still occurs. I always check the download library and the files still randomly stop downloading saying it's "complete".

Unsub the enhanced demo and try that. I've had issues with some of the enhanced models. (But I can't remember is it was the Demo, Soldier or Heavy)

Issue persists, stopped downloading somewhere around the 27mb mark.
I might have to find an alternative source for downloading if there are any.

Weird... One last thing, and it may sound stupid, but close steam and re-run it as an administrator... (I know, you already have administrator rights) but actually go to the steam.exe right click on it and launch it as an administrator.

Even worse, it does not download at all :(

man, don't know... I can't see it not downloading in administrator mode... wow!!!

I'm not so sure what to do now, this is unusual and extremely frustrating.
I can download other non SFM workshop items just fine without issues. (e.g. Garry's Mod)

Thank you for your help anyways.

May be time for a validation of the local cache files... Just to see if there is a corrupted file in there somewhere

sad to say, but I am having sort of the same problem. Recently, I upgraded from windows Vista to Windows 8 (32 Bit) and I re-downloaded SFM, and when I start up, I create a new project, and it asks me if I wanna download my workshop files. And so I do. but it says I have 6 items left, freezes, and then closes. (Freeze lasts almost 1.2 seconds usually.) No idea what's going on, maybe I downloaded a corrupted SFM or something of the such.

This is a common problem with all Source Engine games and tools. As far as I can tell, there's a memory leak or something in Valve's implementation. If you are installing content beyond a certain size, depending on your system, this will happen (SFM will freeze, then steam will freeze, and both will silently crash).

It happens to me with Garry's Mod, it happens to me with Left 4 Dead 2, and it's always because it's trying to install Workshop content that is beyond a certain file size/complexity. Unsurprisingly, it's also happening with SFM now, too.

The solution is simple: don't use the workshop. Install everything via or something.
