Texture help?
Do you guys know of any free programs that can allow me to draw directly onto a model to make materials for SFM models? I know there's one out there but have no idea what it's called or any of that.
After finally finishing the modeling part of my Sonic character, I copied some materials from the Sonic model the whole thing was based off of. Now I'm trying to add stripes to the character to make him look like himself, but it's getting really annoying having to do the whole trial-and-error process. So if one of you could tell me about some program I could use to draw directly onto the model so I can have an approximate texture to use, that would be great.

The only way you can draw directly on a character (for free) that I know of is to decompile the model bring it into Blender, add the texture you want to change and use the quick edit function of the texture paint tool. You save the changed material to a png file and then export that to a vtf using GIMP of VTFEdit.

Oh yeah, I do remember there being some sort of texturing tool in Blender, but I didn't mess with it at all because I didn't think I'd need it at first. Thanks!

You have to convert them using VTFEdit or GIMP with the VTF Plug in... I actually show how its done in my new guide.

Oh, okay. I knew I needed to convert, just don't know yet how to make them show in Blender XD

Walk through the materials portion of the guide. or the prop, or the hat portion... The guide is repetitive...

Anyway, it seems like the Sonic model wasn't seamed. I only want to modify one texture, so would it be OK to delete the material things I don't need to modify in Blender?

The texture has to be converted from VTF to a png, tga, jpg, BMP, whatever... You select the object you want to apply the texture to... and open up a UV/Image editor... Go into edit mode the UV will display on the UVMap if it has been assign a precut uv. Select the material button and select the materail you want to edit and click select to select it. Then go to the Texture button and chane the type to image, generated to UV then open the texture that you need. then assign that in the uvmap. That will paint the selected area.

For some reason the UVmap is way below where the texture shows up in the UV editor. Is this making it so that the model isn't being painted?

no, the UVs are tiled, they should fall into place, But I usually move the islands down onto the map to be sure.

Aaand there's the massive problem of the fact that every texture is on top of eachother. I looked at the UV map and can clearly see the different textures from my knowledge of them, there aren't islands, jsut everything stacked on top of itself. This is a multiple-material model, by the way.
You know what, maybe you would understand my problem a bit more if you could see my model in Blender. Here: {LINK REMOVED}
