How do I paint the Dr's Dapper Topper?

I try all possible methods of painting hats with the Dapper Topper but the best I can do is make it black or darker shades of red. I wanna paint it Australium Gold. How do I do this?

We (or at least I) haven't found the the secret behind painting this hat. Everything I've tried to paint it has failed.

Last time the best I could do was retexture it, but I also had to change something in the VMT file. I forgot what I did though..

The best I can do with this is turn it greyscale when painting it.

Nope. just lite red to black

You need to right click on it, then select "paint" and select which paint you want to use.
