the dota tools have a map editor, model editor, material editor and particle editor all build in. you can import smds and edit models right there. and compile them.

new hammer crashes on me though. loads fine, but as soon as I try to load a map or create new, it crashes. no error messages or anything.

Dota 2 would probably get ported to Source 2, but it probably won't change too much. The map uses a global lighting system and the core gameplay would most likely stay the same. Probably just things like animation improvements, particle improvements, improved phys sim and hopefully improved AI.

Before anyone asks - yes, there's data files for SFM in the Source 2 tools, but you can't load it because they haven't been ported to the New Ways.

Still waiting for Left 4 Dead 3........ but I'm still lookin forward for those new features soon.

no, dota has been fully ported to source 2. the main difference is the tools. there are ALOT of features in these tools. if I load up an smd in the model editor, it automatically creates a .vmdl of it. you can add meshes, has a bone merge tool, can add hitboxes with a click.

the material editor has check boxes for numerous vmt commands and can preview right there.

only thing that sucks if the new hammer keeps crashing on me.

oh they update the tools. now hammer works for me. :D

SFM ON SOURCE 2!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Aw, I missed this in my inbox. (Since my laptop charger died abotu a week ago, and I didn't want to go through 109 comments/disccusions/notifications.) This explains what people mean about "Dota 2 on Source 2".
Part of me is looking forward to the features of Source FilmMaker 2, part of me is terrified of most models, materials, sounds, maps, etcetera from Source FilmMaker probably no longer working in Source FilmMaker 2 when it'll be made.

Edit: By the way guys, don't expect Source FilmMaker 2 before Team Fortress 2 gets updated with Source 2. I mean, Source FilmMaker is an edit on Team Fortress 2's engine, and as Team Fortress 2 is still using Source... yeah.

if dota and the tools are any judge it will be fully backwards compatible. all the tools accept the old formats.

I'd still have to recompile models, reconvert textures, re-something every thing I want to use, right? And I use DMX, by the way, not SMD. Not that it has any relevance, probably.

Whelp, any major update to the engine would cause this anyway. Stuff that people have to deal with.

It's still annoying. Well, I hope Team Fortress 2 and Source FilmMaker gets updated to Source 2 soon-ish. That will probably take 9 years.

It seemed to do that stuff automatically. I had imported an smd of a model I had done some time ago into the model editor and it instantly created a vmdl for that smd. and this is without saving or exporting anything.

Yeah, but I need to define stuff like eyes and bodygroups and skintables and such. I'll figure it out when Source 2 comes for Team Fortress 2 and/or Source FilmMaker, though. (I don't have Dota 2 installed, and I don't want to install it just for Source 2 test stuff.)

the new version doesn't use QCs at all. the model editor seems to let you do everything except actual mesh creation. you can add meshes, add bones, etc.
