It looks to me like it's doing what it's supposed to do...
I see no problem here.

It's making weird ripples. In other posters people made I don't see that.

Something to do with the noise in your volumetric. Not sure if there's a slider for that but… yeah…

It looks exactly as it should, considering there are only 256 colours per pixel per channel (red/green/blue). However, if you had, I don't know, 4294967296 colours per pixel per channel,[www.facepunch.com] it could look better due to the way it will interpolate it back down to 256.

@surfer171 - There is a slider for adjusting the "noise" or intensity of the volumetric effect...

That slider doesn't affect this problem. (The problem is the colour banding.)

which can't be solved... really. export pfm. convert to 48bit png or use dithering. if not dithered, on a regular 24bit display it'll always band tho. or does it not? not sure if this helps.

Refer to comment #4 of this thread.

i saw that. a dead thread. got no images to visualize anymore. and it doesn't cover the general 8 bit ness of displaying or the dithering method. ;)

here i might wanna ask howto figure out to change the desktop color depth to hi10. is that the default? it offers atleast 1024 shades of grey.

All I know is that I have seen a thread/tutorial like that with images, where the colour banding was nearly non-existant, where-as it was very existant in normal exports.

i know that. i've seen this too. maybe... using uncompressed or bigger gobos helps. this should reduce banding. it's got a bigger color resolution. i can still share my supersoft[drive.google.com] gobo. most of all 256 shades of grey in a somewhat soft circle.

i could... maybe... create the uber for that. with r, g and b steps and make it larger to fit the whole rgb grey gradient, but i'm somewhat sure it'd discolor too. mmh.
