Game mode
So I wanted to have some terrorists and counter-terrorists from css doing things in game, then edit it, but it seems only TF2 is the only game you can use in game mode

SFM is a modified version of TF2 - there is no way to use any other game in game mode.

oh... is there a way you can manually change the game through files or anything?

If there were, I would have phrased it as "it's a pain in the butt", rather than "there is no way".

It might be theoretically possible if you were a mega programming genius with far too much free time, but if you were, you could probably make a program a lot better than SFM.

For other games, you can load in animation sequences, animate manually or puppet using animation data from the TF2 game mode, but there's no direct way to play any other game and use that as footage.

It's clever software, but it is ultimately just a modified version of TF2. Being able to switch between different versions of Source would be a programming nightmare.

As such, if you watch the making of the CS:GO trailer:

... you can see that the animation was primarily based off real-life footage.

To be honest, game mode is underwhelming. While it is occasionally useful for quickly adding life to background characters, it only produces very basic animations.
Any actually interesting goings-on have to be animated manually.

I'm not a very good SFM animator, I'm a beginner and the valve tutorials aren't very helpful

As a beginner, you should know that animation is not an easy to get a grip on and in-game recording is not an easy alternative than doing manual animation.

Keep watching the official tutorials till you understand all the basics before getting your hands dirty on manual animating.

Also, I recommend Jimer Lins, Thomas Larson and Pte Jack youtube channels for advanced tutorials.
