What's in the box, box gone!

Hello. So, on the side quest called "What's in the box" you are given a box. To open it, you need to drop the box amongst the termites so they can eat it open for you (same thing for the wheel they need to eat so you can have a gear to raise the dam and save the orphan)

So, I killed all the termites first, before I discovered what they had to do. So I then dropped the box and the wheel there and went back to that Eubrik guy, so they could eat it when they respawn. But when I came back, both items were gone! I killed the termites again with the hopes that maybe they will drop, but nothing. Now I can't save the orphan and open the box. Anyone know a workaround?

Assuming they don't want to screw you up for making a mistake, did you check these two things:

• Whereever the box came from, maybe you can get another one?
  
• Did you check your "lost and found"?
