help required for dedicated server
can someone please tell me the way to run a proper dedicated server?
if you could simply point me to a tutorial that would be ideal...

obviously, simply running the server from the steam tools section is not the way to do it because my results so far have been that i can not join my own server from the machine i am running it on because i get a "steam validation rejected" message and my server can't be seen in the server browser from the other side of the internet.

so far i am not receiving any help in the developer's support forum. any actual help would be very much appreciated...

I posted quite an extensive list of ND information resources in this post, check it out :)

What you want to look at specifically would be: http://forums.interwavestudios.com/wiki/index.php/Main_Page
Look for the servers tab on the left side of the page.

Cheers!

thanks, now i just need to learn the administrative console commands like how to kick players so i don't have to run a passworded server all the time.

This game is based on the Source engine from L4D2 so it's the same common command like in every other Source engine game, like TF2.

You can kick in-game through the console even without sourcemod installed. All you need to do is to open it in game, login to the rcon using the rcon_password command (I think you set the password in the server.cfg file on your server) so you get the actual power to kick a player, then type in console: rcon kick <STEAMID>

You could also use a permanent solution like: rcon ban <STEAMID>

To get the Steam IDs of all the players currently playing in the server, type in console: status

Maybe the name for the commands are a bit different in game so you could type: find ban
To find all the commands with ban in it.
And if you don't know how to use a command: help <commandname>

Here's the list of all recorded Source commands but ND is not limited to those: https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Console_Command_List

Good luck with your server management!

Oh, hello DOOMJESUS. It's nice to see your behaviour around these parts is at least a little more civil...

I'd recommend installing Metamod and Sourcemod. They offer a full package of administrative tools like you would see on major servers like kick, ban, vote, etc. Installation is fairly simple and well-documented, so you shouldn't have problems getting it to work.

thanks for the advice but that won't be necessary. one session was enough for me to see all i needed to see. none of my friends took interest in this game either. i'm not benevolent enough to waste my resources on a public server so another super-cheap game goes into the dust bin. not a substantial loss, par for the course with these low budget titles, especially source mods. every other source mod i've ever tried has left a lot to be desired and this one is no exception...
